"What's my number?"

For many people in their 50s, that's the first retirement question. It's a reasonable place to start. But a single savings target leaves out much of what shapes a retirement decision.

Questions worth considering alongside the number:
→ What does your lifestyle cost today, and how might that change in retirement?
→ Where will income come from, and in what order will you draw it?
→ Is a gradual step-down, like reduced hours or part-time work, an option in your field?
→ How might market conditions, health, or family needs affect your timeline?

A savings target is one input. Looking at retirement, income sources, and flexibility together can give a fuller picture of when retirement may be possible.

Some of the hardest decisions in business can be the most personal.

Chuck Frank shares why planning ahead - and having important conversations before you're forced to have them - can help business owners navigate ownership, succession, and the unexpected with greater clarity.

From buy-sell agreements to long-term transition planning, the goal is to make the difficult decisions before emotion has to make them for you.

"Begin with the end in mind." Stephen Covey's advice holds up especially well for business owners thinking about an exit.

In this clip from The Legacy Behind the Logo, the conversation centers on a simple sequence: get clear on what life after a sale looks like, what you want the business to accomplish financially, and then work backward from there. When family is involved, that intentionality matters even more.

There's also a practical question raised that many owners with partners will recognize: there's value in the business, but where will each owner's share actually come from?

When a private equity firm buys a business, the business isn't the client. The fund's investors are: pension funds, insurance companies, and wealthy individuals expecting a return. The company is how that return gets delivered, which is why many PE firms look to sell again in four to six years.

For owners thinking about selling, stepping back, or passing the business on, it can help to understand whose interests a deal is built around, well before an offer arrives.

According to the Exit Planning Institute, 75% of business owners profoundly regret selling within a year.¹

Often it isn't about the price. It's about the role that comes after.

Chuck Frank stayed eight years after selling his first company. On The Legacy Behind the Logo, he shared his advice: write your own job description before the deal is signed.

That role is a financial decision too. It shapes your income, any earnout, and when you can fully step away.

Those terms are set before signing and are hard to change after.

Most owners focus on the check when they sell. The real deal is what happens to your people after.

One thing Chuck shared stood out: being transparent with all of his employees about the plan paid dividends for his company.

Open books. Honest conversations. Real succession planning.

If you're selling, what would matter most to you: price, people, or freedom?

Save this if you're thinking about an exit, or send it to a founder who's planning one. Listen to the full episode on The Legacy Behind the Logo: https://hubs.la/Q04z9c280

The more you've built, the more your financial decisions start to affect each other.

Early on, planning is mostly about saving enough. Later, the questions get more connected.

Restricted stock units vest, and suddenly one company makes up a large share of your net worth.
A Roth conversion lowers future taxes but raises this year's income, which can affect Medicare premiums down the road.

A gift to your children, a donation to a cause you care about, and the sale of appreciated stock each change the tax picture for the others.

Retirement income may come from four or five different sources, each taxed differently.
None of these decisions is especially complicated on its own. The challenge is that each one touches the rest.

That's where a plan earns its value. It doesn't predict the future. It gives every decision a reference point, so the pieces work together instead of pulling against each other.

When you make a major financial decision, who is looking at how it affects everything else?
