If you call the number on a Medicare mailer, who are you talking to?

Someone who works for that company.

They'll show you their plans.

They won't show you the company down the street.

That's their job.

Here's what I do instead.

I put several companies side by side with your doctors and prescriptions.

Then we let the numbers do the talking.

After you enroll, you don't call a 1-800 number.

You call our office. The claim, the new card, the question.

The one who signs you up is the one who answers next year.

It never costs you a penny. The insurance companies pay me to take care of you.

I'm filling October review slots now. Annual Enrollment opens October 15.

If you’re on Medicare in Kentucky and checked your bank account today, you might have found an extra $90.

Or you might have found nothing.

Both are normal.

It’s a one-time $90 Part B rebate. Direct deposits started this morning.

You get it if you’re on Original Medicare and pay your own standard Part B premium.

You don’t get it if you’re on a Medicare Advantage plan. Or if Medicaid pays your premium. Or if you pay the higher-income surcharge.

More than half of Kentuckians on Medicare are on an Advantage plan. So most of the people at your church didn’t get it either.

If you’re one of our Advantage clients wondering what you did wrong: nothing. The line was drawn by a 2008 law, not by anything on your account.

There’s nothing to sign up for. If someone calls, texts, or emails offering to “release” your $90 or “file” for you, hang up. No plan can get it for you either, so switching to chase it would be a mistake.

We wrote up who gets it, where the money comes from, and the scam calls to expect:

If you're on Medicare in central Kentucky, here's what a review actually looks like.

Most people I sit with tell me some version of this.

"I'm not sure I'm on the right plan."

"I don't really know how to use it."

"I just want someone to hand it all off to."

Here's how it works.

I learn about you.

We check your prescriptions.

We check your doctors.

Then we put the insurance companies side by side and let the numbers do the talking.

If you call the company on the mailer, you only see their plans.

After you enroll, the claim, the new card, and the question all come to our office. Not a 1-800 number.

It never costs you a penny.

Andrew and I get to be the faces in the Medicare videos.

Christina gets the phone.

It's the first week of October. My calendar is full. Andrew's calendar is full.

Christina runs both of them.

Andrew gave a thumbs-up for the photo. Christina was too busy to look up.

She answers the calls.

She books every review for Andrew and me.

She calls to confirm your appointment so nothing slips.

She also keeps the two of us on schedule, which might be the hardest part of her job.

When you call our office this fall, a real person in Lexington picks up. Most of the time, it's her.

We'd like to be your advisors for the next 15 years. She's a big reason we can say that.

Annual enrollment opens October 15, and October review slots are filling now.

If Christina has ever helped you, tell her in the comments.

Not sure if annual enrollment even applies to you?

It depends on which plan you have.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap): not part of annual enrollment. Your plan doesn't reset this fall.

Standalone drug plan (Part D): yes. Premiums, drug lists, and pharmacies can change January 1.

Medicare Advantage (Part C): yes. Doctors, copays, and drug coverage can all change January 1.

If you have a Supplement with a separate drug plan, the drug plan is the part to check.

Annual enrollment runs October 15 to December 7. After that, with a few exceptions, you're in for the year.

If you're on a Medicare Advantage plan, our team is filling Medicare review slots now.

If your Medicare Advantage plan mailed you an Annual Notice of Change this fall, five words do most of the work on those pages.

Know these and the letter reads easy.

Premium. What you pay each month for the plan.

Deductible. What you pay before the plan starts paying.

Max out of pocket. The most you can pay in a year for covered services. Think of it as your safety net. It resets every plan year, usually January 1.

Copay. A flat dollar amount for a service. When you see a dollar sign, that's what you pay.

Coinsurance. Your share as a percentage. When you see a percent sign, you pay that percent of the cost.

The two people mix up most are deductible and max out of pocket. One is where the plan starts paying. The other is where you stop.

Open your letter, find each of these five, and compare this year's number to next year's.

I wrote the full article, including one person's whole year walked through all five terms, what does not count toward your max out of pocket, and which row to read first.

If your Medicare Advantage plan has a dental allowance, there's one word to look for on your plan papers this fall.

Coinsurance.

I did about 10 reviews today. In four or five of them, we had this same conversation.

It matters for all your comprehensive work. Crowns, bridges, partials, root canals, dentures.

Here's one example. A $1,000 allowance and a $500 crown.

No coinsurance: the plan pays all $500. You pay nothing. You have $500 left.

25% coinsurance: you pay $125. The plan pays $375. You have $625 left.

Same allowance on the brochure. Different bill at the dentist's chair. And it works that way on every piece of comprehensive work you have done.

More plans are moving to coinsurance, and it's catching people off guard who have never paid for major dental work before.

To check yours, open your Annual Notice of Change or Summary of Benefits and find the comprehensive dental row. A dollar amount means no coinsurance. A percentage means you have it.

The part most people miss is what happens when you need more than one thing done in a year. I wrote the whole thing out, plus the three questions to ask your plan before you sit in the chair.

What is the Annual Enrollment Period, and why does it matter if you're on a Medicare Advantage plan?

It runs October 15 to December 7.

It's the one time each year you can change your Medicare Advantage plan, switch to a different one, or go back to Original Medicare.

It's also when your plan can change on you. Your doctors, your prescriptions, your copays, your max out of pocket. Any of them can look different on January 1.

Your plan already told you what's changing. It's called the Annual Notice of Change, and it should be in your mailbox now.

What it won't tell you is whether there's a better fit out there.

That's what a review is for. We lay out your options side by side, against your doctors and prescriptions, in one place.

October review slots are filling. Tap Call Now or dial (859) 785-8289. Your call comes straight to my office.

The 2027 Medicare Advantage plans came out today.

This is my calendar for the rest of the week.

Every red block from Thursday to Saturday is a review with someone on Medicare Advantage.

Reviews are in full swing at our office on Monarch Street here in Lexington.

If you're on a Medicare Advantage plan, your 2027 Annual Notice of Change letter is already in your mailbox. Your doctors, your prescriptions, your max out of pocket. Any of them can change in January.

Annual Enrollment opens October 15. October review slots are filling up, and I'd rather get you on the calendar now than at the last minute in December.

If you're on a Medicare Advantage plan in central Kentucky, this is the number to check this fall.

Your max out of pocket.

Andrew and I played true or false at the board.

Original Medicare on its own has no max.

Every Medicare Advantage plan has one.

Your prescriptions don't count toward it. Drugs have their own cap, $2,400 in 2027.

Doctor visits, lab work, and hospital stays do.

Hit your max, and covered in-network medical care costs you $0 the rest of the year.

And that max can change every January. Often it goes up.

Your 2027 plan letter came in September. Your new number is in it.

Annual Enrollment opens October 15, and I'm filling October review slots now.

Your call comes straight to my office. It never costs you a penny.
