At Hunsicker, we don’t believe that great ideas are just born; instead, they’re meticulously crafted and refined. This is where our Stage Gates come into play as part of our Playbook. Picture a series of checkpoints, or gates, each representing a critical stage in our playbook process. These gates serve as rigorous evaluation points that ensure each concept we nurture is scrutinized, tested, and validated before it moves forward.⁠

Each gate has its own set of criteria, tailored to measure the concept's viability, scalability, and alignment with market needs. These criteria are not just quantitative checkpoints; they are qualitative measures that assess the concept's potential impact and feasibility. This blend of rigor and creativity ensures that only the most promising, well-crafted ideas make it through.⁠

The journey through the Stage Gates is not always linear. Often, instead of discarding ideas, we see them morph and evolve. A concept might pivot drastically, finding its true calling in a direction we hadn't initially anticipated. This flexibility and openness to learning and evolution are key to Hunsicker’s process and one of the core elements of how we allow our concepts and ideas to reach their full potential - or realize that it may be time to move on and start anew.⁠

💭 Welcome to our Hunsicker Headspace series, where we highlight unique problems and insights heavy on the minds of our Studio team. For this first edition, we bring you our observations as they relate to the increasing burden being placed on unpaid caregivers across the US as our country’s population continues to age.

Family caregivers make up the largest pool of heroes in healthcare, yet are often overlooked despite being integral in shaping patient outcomes.

1️⃣ According to a report by AARP, there are over 48 million unpaid caregivers in the U.S. delivering assistance to adults with limitations in daily activities. Despite their critical role,

2️⃣ 80% report emotional stress

3️⃣ 50% have limited access to external support services

4️⃣ 61% juggle full-time jobs alongside caregiving

5️⃣ and 6 out of 10 report being asked to perform medical procedures like blood pressure monitoring or giving injections that they may not be trained to perform

These numbers aren’t just statistics. They depict a stark reality: a rising wave of challenges met with limited support. We see an unmatched opportunity: to leverage technology in bridging these gaps, ensuring caregivers aren’t just working, but thriving.

Our studio team is pursuing a meaningful opportunity to create real positive change for unpaid caregivers. In the US, over 40 million people tirelessly offer unpaid care to their loved ones annually, often navigating this journey without adequate tools and support, and receiving no formal compensation for the care they provide. We have identified a promising solution and will be launching a new company soon that seeks to help caregivers manage their journey and the health outcomes of their loved ones.

We’re now seeking two visionary founding team members to join us on this venture from the beginning. Had a great time last night at our very first rendition of Hunsicker’s Fireside Convos! 🔥

In evaluating how our team can continue to build connections both in and outside of Lexington, we saw a gap in opportunities for players within the region’s innovation ecosystem to connect outside of happy hours + panels.

Thus, Hunsicker’s Fireside Convos were born: a series of curated, intimate, invite-only group discussions on various topics relevant to our community and entrepreneurship focused around a discussion piece chosen beforehand.

Last night, our discussion centered on AI in KY and an episode of the All In podcast on Auto GPT’s massive potential to disrupt the way we build startups today. Everyone gave the podcast a listen, gathered their thoughts, and came ready to hash out what we think the future of innovation within the new context of AI development will hold. It’s safe to say we covered a lot of ground, made new friends, left feeling refreshed and invigorated, and are looking forward to the next one already.
