Androscoggin Habitat for Humanity

Androscoggin Habitat for Humanity Androscoggin Habitat for Humanity was founded in our community in 1987. But hundreds more in our community still live in deplorable conditions.

Androscoggin Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose sole purpose is to build simple, decent, affordable housing for working, low-incmoe families in Androscoggin and Oxford Counties. Since then, thanks to dedicated and generous supporters and volunteers, we have already built 15 homes ~ providing shelter to more than 87 men, women and children. That’s why Habitat’s house-building work is so urgent!

Habitat was created to provide a long-term solution to the need for simple, decent housing for low-income families. People working in Habitat believe that all people deserve a decent place to live. Using volunteer labor and donated materials and working in partnership with our families whenever possible, we are building sturdy, affordable houses. These are sold to families at cost, with zero-percent interest loans. All mortgage payments are recycled to build the next home. We do more than build homes: We foster partnerships with our families and provide them with supportive services during the first year of their mortgage. Habitat is not a charity program. Rather, it is an organization that enables families to build a successful future. We believe our families need capital, not charity, and co-workers, not caseworkers. In short, a hand up – not a handout. How are families selected? An individual or family can receive an application by contacting Androscoggin Habitat at 786-2598. A committee reviews all applications and selects a family on the basis of need for decent housing, ability to pay, and willingness to partner with Habitat. The family agrees to work on their own home or do other comparable work for Habitat. Habitat does not discriminate in any way in the selection of homeowners.

General information

How can I help? Your time, talents and/or resources are needed. Look below to see what you can do to help us help others: -- Invite a Habitat representative to your church, community group or civic organization to talk about Habitat for Humanity. -- Help build a new home for a family in your community. Building skills are useful but there is work for every volunteer. -- Help out at the new Andro ReStore at 44 Strawberry Ave. in Lewiston. The ReStore sells donated construction materials and uses the money it earns to help build Habitat houses. -- Donate new or used materials or tools needed for house construction or to stock the Andro ReStore. -- Donate or help find land for a home site. -- Join one of our working committees or our Board of Directors. We are always looking for new committee or Board members to help us make this program work for others. -- Put together a fundraising activity to benefit Habitat for Humanity, or send us a donation that could be tax-deductible. Anything you can do or provide will be very much appreciated by our organization and our partner families.
