Gambling is soaring, and so is gambling addiction.

It can start with seemingly innocent apps like Candy Crush Saga, and can quickly escalate to slots or online sports betting.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings are now overflowing with kids and young adults from 16 - 34. We're seeing many families lose their savings, home, and retirement accounts due to problem gambling.

Every parent should be aware of the risk, and know that gambling is one of the easiest addictions to hide.

Here's a very moving interview between Rob Minnick, of ODAAT Gambling Awareness, and Stone, a young man who struggled with a gambling addiction. Parents should watch it. Tell everyone you know about the risks of gambling.

UPCOMING EVENT: The 2nd Annual African American Conference on Problem Gambling, hosted by the Illinois Council on Problem Gambling, will begin this Friday, Feb 21, and take place at the UIC Student Center in Chicago.

The event aims to bridge the gap that affects a historically under-resourced Illinois community by:

Fostering Inspiring Conversations – Expert speakers will lead discussions on reducing stigma, raising awareness, offering treatment, and accessing community support.

Offering Educational Support – Event organizers will provide tools, strategies, and resources for how to address issues related to problem gambling.

With the Super Bowl just hours away, sports fans are eagerly placing their bets, anticipating big wins. Though last year’s sportsbooks lost an unprecedented $64M on the game, that was a rare event – in only 3 of 58 Super Bowls have the sportsbooks lost money. As you place your bets, please remember the harm that gambling can cause to young watchers who increasingly equate sports viewing with betting. This year, we ask viewers to from betting and simply enjoy the game.

Airing tonight and sponsored by the NY State Council on Problem Gambling and , the campaign asks us all to consider the emotional and financial impacts of problem gambling. This new initiative will also offer financial counseling for NY residents at zero cost.

Super Bowl 59 is almost here! And with it comes increased attention on gambling due to the heavy commercialization and promotion of sports betting. As sports media companies increasingly integrate gambling content into sports programming, we need to consider the risks for youth and young adults – and the perceived expectation that sports and betting go hand in hand. As a responsible measure, sports media companies who promote betting need to also develop and promote innovative, responsible gambling messages.

Toward this goal, NY State will be airing ads for its campaign, which reminds us to consider the emotional and financial impacts of gambling. Through this initiative, New York residents can receive financial counseling at no cost thanks to a partnership between GamFin, New York Council on Problem Gambling and NYS OASAS.

Today, Janice Pierce, our Financial Counseling Practice Lead, is speaking at the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio conference and leading a session called “Touchpoint for Recovery: Why Finances Matter in Problem Gambling.”

In this breakout session, attendees will be given an overview of the financial counseling approach that GamFin financial counselors use with their clients.

Participants will explore different scenarios to learn how talking about money can lead to better mental health and reduce anxiety and stress. Janice will also discuss:

- How financial counseling can be pivotal to providing hope for individuals and their families in gambling recovery
