Passive cost containment strategies have a place in a well-built plan.

The problem is when they get presented as the solution to a renewal increase.

Telehealth saves money when members use it.

Wellness programs work when employees participate.

Before accepting a proposal, ask how the plan moves members to engage with these features.

Before you evaluate a health plan, it helps to understand who built it and why.

The structure of the healthcare system creates incentives that do not always point in the direction of lower costs for employers and employees.

It's easy to lead with the discount because carriers make it look impressive.

The smarter move is helping your clients understand what the claim cost after everything settled.

That's where the real value shows up, and that's the conversation that separates good advisors from great ones.

The PPO discount is enticing, but the real question is what the plan paid for the claim.

There are products in the market today that use a national network as a safety net while pursuing fair market pricing on claims.

That combination changes the conversation around what a competitive plan looks like.

Two carriers can call their product level funded, but have almost nothing else in common.

Before you compare options, understand what self-funding is and how it works.

Once you have that foundation, the differences between level-funded products become clear, and so does which one is the right fit for your client.

PPO discounts look good on paper, but the starting number matters just as much as the percentage.

If a provider bills $10,000 and the plan pays $5,000 after a 50 percent discount, that still might not be a fair price for the care delivered.

Knowing what the plan paid per claim is where smarter renewal conversations begin.

If you are selling level-funded plans, you are already in the self-funded game.

Most brokers don't realize it, but the federal government regulates every level-funded plan under ERISA.

There is no universal definition of level-funded.

Understanding the components of self-funding is what separates a broker who can defend a recommendation from one who just passes along a quote.

Any carrier or vendor can talk about cost containment.

The ones worth your attention can prove it in the data.

Before you bring a plan to a client, ask what reporting comes with it and what the business owner has access to.

Yesterday was exactly what I needed.

The KC Benefits & Insurance Summit delivered in every way.

Great speakers, real conversations, and the kind of energy in a room that reminds you why you chose this industry in the first place.

I left with pages of notes and a long list of things I am ready to put to work.

The sessions on fiduciary responsibilities and cost containment alone were worth the day.

Courtney Krusemark's perspective on wellness, Phil Ledgerwood’s presentation on AI strategy, Nick Karls breaking down the legal landscape, Josh Schreiner’s self-funded strategies session, Joe Bush’s take on data, and Justin Fallein’s overview of high-performance networks — sharp people sharing sharp ideas.

There is something about spending a full day learning alongside peers that resets your perspective.

I walked in focused. I walked out invigorated.

Now comes the fun part, taking what I learned and bringing it back to the brokers and clients we serve every day.

To everyone who was there yesterday, it was great to meet you and spend the day in the same room.

Now I want to hear from you.

If you attended the KC Benefits & Insurance Summit, what was your biggest takeaway?

Drop it in the comments.

Today is the day.

The KC Benefits & Insurance Summit is here, and I could not be more fired up to be part of it.

We’re going to talk about fiduciary responsibilities, self-funding, and cost containment. These are conversations that separate good brokers from great ones.

I’m excited to be in a room full of people who take this industry seriously and I plan to walk out more equipped to take on the busy season than I walked in.

If you registered, I cannot wait to meet you.
