Pulling the Plug on Dollar General -

I had to pull the plug on Dollar General (DG) after seven years this week. Dollar General does a great job opening new stores but can’t compete with Temu from China and Amazon.

John Knox Village is a non-profit, retirement home in Lee's Summit, Missouri (a suburb of Kansas City). JKV makes about $68 million in revenues. The CEO, Dan Rexroth, made $777,991 in 2022. Richard Klockenga, VP of finance, made $410,080. Laurie Johnson, head of HR, made $225,223. So the CEO made more than 1% of sales. Hmmmmm. Strange even for a for-profit company. Thoughts? Here's a nice little low-risk money-maker--zero coupon U.S. Treasuries. Going out 15 years, they yield 4.7%. If rates drop, you make a nice profit. If rates rise, you wait a couple of years and you're back in the green. Backed by the government. We just bought some today and are going to buy more. Ask your advisor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had lunch with Scott Burnett, lead plaintiff on a lawsuit that broke the realtor’s monopoly on 6% commissions. Until recently, it was non-negotiable for some buyers. What happened was a brilliant attorney was looking for home buyers who had paid the commission. Ultimately, $1.8 billion must be paid from the National Association of Realtors to thousands of buyers.

Scott told me the case may be spreading nationwide. So homebuyers may be entitled to commission reimbursements over that time period.

No one is quite sure and no one is quite sure how this will affect realtors.
