It’s a windy fall night. You hear a loud crack outside, followed by a sound that makes your stomach drop.
A tree from the backyard is now resting across your roof. Shingles are scattered across the lawn, the gutter is bent, and there’s a branch poking through the garage roof.
So, who pays for the damage?
The answer depends on your policy. Homeowners insurance often covers tree damage caused by a covered event, such as a windstorm. But if the tree was rotting or the damage resulted from neglect, coverage may be different. And if a tree falls in your yard without damaging anything, removal costs may not be covered.
The takeaway? Fall is a good time to check your trees and your coverage.
