Alarming Trend: 20 Million Seniors Risk Losing Medicare Guidance
Across the country, major insurers—including UnitedHealthcare, Wellcare, Cigna, Aetna, and Anthem—are drastically reducing or eliminating broker commissions for Medicare Advantage and Part D plans. This troubling trend threatens access to personalized guidance for more than 20 million seniors who rely on licensed agents and brokers to navigate complex Medicare decisions.
For decades, agents and brokers have played a vital role in helping beneficiaries compare plans, avoid costly enrollment mistakes, and ensure their prescriptions remain affordable. They serve not just during enrollment, but throughout the year. Like financial advisors or tax professionals, they cannot sustain these services without fair compensation. If these cuts continue, seniors will be left to face complicated and high-stakes decisions without the expert help they’ve long relied on.
We call on CMS, Congress, and state regulators to take urgent action to restore and protect the compensation structures that make this support possible. Without intervention, millions—especially the most vulnerable—will be left to navigate Medicare alone.
Through NABIP’s Brokers Making a Difference campaign, over 13,000 Medicare beneficiaries have already spoken out about the crucial support they receive from their brokers. Help amplify their message—and yours. Share your story, your impact, and your voice today.
