Hey neighbors! 👋

Had a few people ask me lately why they should go with a local independent agent instead of just grabbing a policy through Costco or USAA, so figured I'd share some thoughts here.

It comes down to three things:

🏠 I shop it for you. I'm not tied to one company — I can pull quotes from three dozen-plus carriers and actually compare coverage, not just price. Big box programs are usually one carrier, take it or leave it.

📍 We know this coast. Here in the Houston/Galveston area, things like TWIA (Texas Windstorm Insurance Association) windstorm coverage, named storm deductibles, and flood zones aren't optional extras — they're the whole ballgame. A national call center rep in another state usually isn't going to catch the stuff that actually matters for a home near the bay.

☎️ When something happens, you call me, a real person. Not a 1-800 queue. If you get a renewal increase, a claim, or a confusing letter from your mortgage company, I answer the phone and we figure it out together — same day, usually.

None of this means Costco or USAA are bad — they can be a fine fit for some folks! But if you've ever felt like you're just a policy number, or you're not 100% sure your home is covered the way you think it is, it might be worth a second set of eyes. "Why are my rates going up so much?"

It's a question I get asked many times per week. One of the answers is all peril losses have increased by 52% since 2019. All perils include hail; wind, water, fire and lightning; and non-weather related claims such as water leaks, thefts or liability. Take a look at the link below for more info.

Catastrophe claims represented 46% of claims across all perils combined in 2023, the highest in seven years.

“In the last year, the US saw several historic-level weather disaster events and the highest level of catastrophic claims across all perils we’ve seen in the past seven years, which contributes to rising premiums that consumers across the country face right now."

The US home insurance industry has experienced an upward trend in loss cost across all perils combined over the past seven years, resulting in
