Freezing temperatures are headed our way this weekend, and since hard freezes are uncommon in our area, they often lead to preventable property damage.

- Protect your pipes: Cover outdoor faucets and disconnect hoses. Drip all indoor faucets, especially if on an exterior wall. Open cabinets.
- Keep home warm: Keep thermostat set to at least 60 degrees. If traveling, DO NOT TURN THE HEAT OFF!
- Outdoor Items: Shut off sprinkler systems. Wrap exposed faucets. Cover outdoor plants.
- Know exactly where the water shutoff valve is located and learn how to turn the main water off. This will be very helpful if the pipes do freeze.
- If possible, park vehicles in garage.

Most homeowners do cover sudden water damage from frozen pipes—but only if reasonable precautions were taken. Claims can be denied if a property was left unheated or neglected.
