Know your rights! "NO SURPRISE ACT OF 2022" A MUST READ!

The No Surprises Act protects people covered under group and individual health plans from receiving surprise medical bills when they receive most emergency services, non-emergency services from out-of-network providers at in-network facilities, and services from out-of-network air ambulance service providers.

What is a Surprise Medical Bill?
A surprise medical bill is an unexpected bill, often for services received from a health care provider or facility that you did not know was out-of-network until you were billed. Your health insurance may not cover the entire out-of-network cost which leaves you owing the difference between the billed cost and the amount your health insurance paid. This is known as “balance billing.” This bill could be for a service like anesthesiology or laboratory tests. You may not know that the provider or facility is out-of-network until you are billed.

Starting in 2022, people with income up to 150% of the federal poverty level (or FPL, which is $19,320 per year for a single person in 2022, $32,940 for family of 3) can enroll for health insurance due to a new special enrollment opportunity offered each month. To sign up during the year, people can attest to having 2022 income at or below 150% FPL, then continue with their application.

Most insurance companies only sell health plans during an open enrollment period that starts in November. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you can also buy a plan from February 15 through August 15 this year. There are other options if you need health insurance.
