This is a topic that didn't come up much in benefits conversations five years ago. Now it's showing up consistently in trend reports, policy discussions and employee surveys…

Fertility benefits (things like IVF coverage, fertility preservation and treatment support) are becoming part of what employees consider when evaluating a job offer.

This follows a nationwide trend. State-level mandates are expanding, while federal initiatives are making coverage more accessible. And employee demand is real!

For small business owners, this doesn't mean an immediate overhaul of your plan. But it does mean staying informed.

Some insurers are beginning to offer fertility coverage as an add-on, whereas some voluntary benefit structures make it available without employer-sponsored cost. It's worth asking your benefits advisor what options exist for your plan size.

Your employees' lives are layered. The more your benefits reflect that, the stronger your team becomes!

Job candidates are drawing conclusions about your company before they ever set foot in an interview. Your benefits package is part of that first impression! A strong benefits package communicates:

-That you take employee wellbeing seriously, not just productivity
-That you've thought about what your team actually needs
-That you're a business worth building a career with

Meanwhile, gaps in your benefits package can signal:
-That long-term support isn't part of the deal
-That turnover may be higher than it looks from the outside
-That employees are expected to absorb costs the company won't share

The good news is that even modest improvements send a meaningful message. You don't have to outspend larger competitors. You just have to be thoughtful about what you offer and why.

Whenever you announce a new benefit to your team, send a one-paragraph plain-language explainer alongside the official plan documents. Most employees won't read the fine print, but they will read a simple summary that tells them what it means for them and their family!

The right people aren't just looking for a paycheck… they're looking for a reason to choose your company. That’s why this quote from Peter Thiel is worth some time and consideration!

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy have gone from niche to mainstream fast. With prescriptions more than tripling since 2020, it's only a matter of time before your employees start asking whether their plan covers them…

Before making any decisions, here are five questions worth asking:
-How do other employers in your industry approach this?
-What prior authorization requirements can help manage costs?
-Is your current plan structured to handle specialty drug coverage?
-What does GLP-1 coverage actually cost to add to a group plan?
-Are these medications being prescribed for weight loss, or for conditions like diabetes and heart disease?

This isn't a decision you need to make today. But understanding the landscape now means you won't be caught off guard when the conversation lands on your desk!

Does this scenario sound familiar? You put together a solid benefits package, announce it to your staff at open enrollment, and then employees keep asking questions that suggest they didn’t hear a word of the announcement.

You're not alone in this. Research consistently shows that while most employers believe they communicate benefits well, only a fraction of employees agree.

This gap usually isn't about effort. It comes down to repetition, timing and format!

Basically, a single open enrollment meeting isn't enough. People are overwhelmed and often don't retain the details until they actually need them.

But the fix doesn't have to be complicated. A monthly benefits spotlight, a simple FAQ document or a well-timed reminder tied to a season or life event can close that gap considerably.

Your employees have benefits they're not using. Even if this is a longstanding issue, a few small communication adjustments can change everything!

Some small business owners talk themselves out of offering benefits before they've explored what's actually possible. So, let's clear a few things up…

Myth: “Benefits are only realistic for larger companies.”
Fact: Group health plans are available to businesses with as few as one eligible employee. Small doesn't mean ineligible.

Myth: “Offering benefits will blow my budget!”
Fact: Cost-sharing, level-funded plans and voluntary benefits can make a solid package more affordable than most owners expect.

Myth: “My employees don't expect benefits from my small business.”
Fact: Research consistently shows that benefits rank among the top factors job seekers weigh, regardless of company size.

Myth: “If I start offering benefits, I can't make changes later.”
Fact: Plans can be adjusted, restructured or changed at renewal. You're not locked in.
