Contractors!

Have you ever opened that audit letter and been hit with an unexpected bill?

For many Oklahoma contractors, it’s not payroll that blows up the audit. It’s uninsured subs.

If your subs don’t have their own workers’ comp policy, the premium for their payroll falls on YOU.

Question for you: Do you already have a system for collecting COIs from every sub?

Or is it something you’re working on improving?

Too many contractors wait until the audit letter shows up to start worrying about workers’ comp.

By then, it’s too late.

The truth? The audit isn’t out to get you. It’s just a check on your actual payroll vs. your estimate.

But when you don’t keep clean records or let subs work without proof of coverage, the audit becomes a nightmare.

Our advice: treat it like a year-round job. Keep COIs on file, separate your overtime pay, and consider using a Pay-As-You-Go or monthly reporting plan.

One of the biggest surprises for Oklahoma contractors during a workers’ comp audit?

Uninsured subcontractors.

If your sub doesn’t carry their own workers’ comp coverage, the auditor will add what you paid them to your payroll and you’ll get billed the premium for it.

That’s how a small policy can turn into a massive bill overnight.

Moral of the story: Always collect a Certificate of Insurance (COI) or a valid Affidavit of Exempt Status before your subs step foot on the jobsite.

Here’s a small detail that can make or break your job: the name on your COI must match your contract exactly.

If your contract says "Bob’s Electric, LLC," but your COI just says "Bob’s Electric," a GC can reject it on the spot.

Simple fix? Always double-check names before sending or accepting a COI.

It saves you from delays and keeps you looking professional.

A Certificate of Insurance (COI) is not your actual insurance policy.

It’s proof you have insurance.

Think of it like the auto insurance card in your glove box.

It shows your coverage and dates, but it doesn’t include all the details.

For contractors, the COI is your ticket to jobs. Without it, many GCs won’t even let you on site.

And if you don’t collect one from your subs? Their accidents could become your financial problem.

Contractors!
Have you ever been asked for a bond when applying for a license or permit?

In Oklahoma, plumbers, electricians, and mechanical contractors all need state-level bonds to keep their licenses active.

On top of that, many cities (like OKC, Tulsa, and Enid) have their own separate bonding requirements.
That means the bond you use for one job might not cut it for another.

Question for you: Have you ever run into an issue where the city rules were different from the state rules? How did you handle it?

📖 We pulled this from our latest blog, which you can view on our website. Link is on our page.

Too many contractors confuse “bonded and insured” with being fully protected.

Let’s clear it up:

* Insurance protects YOU.
* A bond protects YOUR CLIENT.

If there’s a claim on your insurance, the carrier pays and you move on.

But if there’s a claim on your bond?
You’re paying that money back.

Many contractors think a bond is like an insurance policy. It’s not.

It’s a promise you’re on the hook for.
