We may never know what kind of weather is headed our way; however, tradition tells us that our storm season is quickly approaching. If you wait until you see a storm on the horizon to add coverage to your auto or home, then you may find yourself out of luck.
Now is a great time to take an inventory of your needs. People often ask Should I just carry liability on my vehicle. To me, the real question to ask is, can you afford to replace this vehicle if something happens to it? New vehicles are very expensive, and we tend to want those older vehicles to last and do our best to keep them running. Our homes are another enormous expense, and it is very dangerous to play Russian roulette with our home insurance. Did you know that if you let your policy lapse to save you money, there are no guarantees that your company will take your coverage back. In fact, many companies do not want to take on a risk that has been allowed to lapse. Some charge extra fees and give you less coverage just to cover a home that has been without policy coverage. We never know what the weather is going to do in Oklahoma, but it is nice to feel secure that you have the coverage and protection you need when the storm rolls in. There is confusion when or if we might need a flood policy. It is considered flood when water comes up from the ground and enters your home.
Your normal home policy typically covers a lot of things, but flooding is excluded from most home policies.
You can purchase a separate Flood policy to protect against flooding. It is often said, “It will never flood at my house.” The truth is we never know when we could be in danger of flooding. Sometimes changes to the environment around us may divert runoff to your property. If the ground is frozen and we have a unexpected downpour there might be nowhere for water to go. What if your next-door neighbors pool collapses, you could have a wave of water rushing into your home.

Even though we are still having some warm days, it is the perfect time to do your safety winter checkup before colder weather arrives.

1. Check your furnace and switch out those air-filter
2. Check your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors
3. Check your water hoses and make sure they are no longer attached to your faucet.
4. Make sure you have faucet covers for each of your outside faucets.
5. Make sure you have a fully charged fire extinguisher for your home.
6. In the event of freezing temperatures, it is a good idea to leave a small trickle of water running.
7. If you are planning to be away from your home, you might come home to frozen pipes if you have turned your heat totally off.
8. Keep an emergency bag in your car, with these items.
• Ice scraper
• Portable shovel
• Bag of sand or kitty litter for traction on slippery surfaces
• Hazard triangles and/or LED flashers to warn approaching drivers and mark your location
• Working flashlight
• Blankets and extra cold weather clothing
• Water and snacks
• First-aid kit
• Jumper cables

Things change, you do not want to be paying insurance on something you do not need. Make it your New Year's resolution to come in and review your policy with our Agent. We have had customers suddenly realize that they have been paying insurance on a car that they have not had for a while or even worse they replaced a vehicle that was never added to the policy.

I just got off the phone with a gentleman who just needed a little help. He wanted to know if I could print out some information for him. After I explained that I could not look his policy up in my system because he had done his policy through an on-line agency he sighed and said. “It seemed easier to do it on my phone, but now I wish I had just spoken with a local Agent.”
Sometimes it may seem easy to press a few buttons on your computer or phone and start a policy, but whenever you need to talk to someone about your billing, your claim, or your coverage you might find yourself wishing that you had taken the time to find a local Agent.

We had a lady come into our office desperate for help. She had started a policy on-line and could not figure out how to finish her registration with her new policy. Many times, people think they are getting a good deal by getting a policy online. The bottom line though is that most people want a contact person that they can talk to face to face. An office close to home where you can chat with friendly agents whenever there is a need. This lady had been on the phone for a long time with her online company and she could not find anyone that could give her the help that she needed. In her own words, she expressed it best when she said, “I should have never gone with that online company, I do not know what I was thinking, I should have known better.”

The temperature is going up, and it looks like everything is going up these days and that includes the cost of insurance. Here are some tips that might help ease the pocketbook a bit.

1. Talk to your Agent, there could be discounts that you are missing out on.
2. Most companies will offer a discount if they have both your auto and home insurance.
3. A deducible is the portion that you pay in the event of a claim, raising your deductible can often save you money on your policy. (speak to your Agent)
4. Look at your auto policy dec page, make sure you are not paying for a vehicle that you no longer own. You also may have an older car that you did not realize you still are carrying comprehensive and collision on. ( it happens more often than you might think.)
5. Check your vehicle identification number (VIN), and make sure the numbers are correct on your insurance dec page. (a wrong number might be costing you more money.)
6. A defensive driving class can save you money on your auto policy.
7. Young drivers’ discounts can include good grades, defensive driving and drivers education.
8. As gas prices keep going up, you might consider a gas discount card or use the Upside app on your smart phone.
9. Be sure and change out the air filters in your AC unit. (Clean filters can save you money and protect you from costly repair bills.)
10. If you are paying for a central station alarm service such as Vivint, make sure you are getting a discount on your home policy.
11. Remember to keep up with your regular auto & home maintenance. ( paying a little on maintenance now can save you money in the long run. )

Many times, people overlook the fact that they need to have proper ownership of a vehicle or a property in order to protect it with Insurance. Parents sometimes will title a vehicle in their child’s name but fail to report this to their Agent. Someone gratefully lets you use a car they no longer drive or carry Insurance on.
