The National Weather Service is anticipating freezing temperatures in the Atlanta area tomorrow. As we head into the colder months, we wish to advise you of certain precautions to take ahead of any freezing temperatures. With freezing temperatures comes the risk of pipes freezing, and serious damage caused by frozen pipes bursting. By following these steps, you can avoid these potential risks:
1. Heating Systems: Please verify that your home’s thermostat is set to an appropriate temperature, which is usually around 68°F (20°C) or higher for the current weather conditions. It is also important to change your air filters to improve the efficiency of your home’s heating system. Additionally, ensure your heating system is serviced and functioning properly, and check for drafts around doors and windows.
2. Plumbing Precautions: To prevent frozen pipes, let faucets drip slightly on extremely cold nights and open cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around plumbing. Additionally, insulate any outdoor pipes or faucets to minimize the risk of freezing and potential damage.
3. Fire Safety: If using fireplaces or space heaters, ensure they are in good working condition and keep flammable materials at a safe distance. Space heaters should only be plugged directly into a wall outlet and never into extension cords, as this can increase the risk of fire. Never leave space heaters unattended.
4. Outdoor Items: Secure outdoor furniture or decorations that could be damaged or cause hazards during winter weather.
