If you have Medicare - **WARNING** - (Forgive the length)
Bit of a public safety notice here; January 1st thru March 31st is the Medicare OPEN Enrollment Period. It’s ONLY available to folks with Medicare Advantage Plans (aka, Medicare Part C plans). Be aware that scammers are out in force calling on folks and sending out deceptive mailings, to get folks to call them. I just had a client who received a letter in the mail stating that her SNAP benefits were ending. She didn’t think she had SNAP benefits and called to see what was going on. They claimed there was a free add-on for her medicare that wouldn’t change anything just give her extra benefits. They changed her from the plan that she should have been on (had the best coverage for her Rx and all her doctors took it) to a plan that didn’t cover all of her Rx. I was able to fix this because of a specific loophole that she qualified for, but in most cases, if you change plans at all during Open Enrollment, you’re stuck with that decision until the 1st of next year. Please, if you have questions about your plan, or are tempted to change plans, make SURE you know what you’re doing!! Even if it’s not me, if you have a relationship with an independent insurance agent, call them first, just to make sure you’re not making a mistake. FYI for all my clients, friends and family who know someone with a Medicare Advantage plan:
If you have a Medicare Advantage plan (Medicare rules won't allow me to site specific plans) there is a HIGH probability that your plan offers an 800 number you can call and speak to a registered nurse or a way to use your phone, tablet or we**am equipped PC to have a video consultation with a doctor, all with no copay. This is a FANTASTIC feature that most folks don't even know they have access to. You can either call me, or the customer service number on the back of your card for more help with this.
