Home Health Care must be intermittent, that is, the care cannot exceed 35 hours per week or six days per week, nor can it be provided for more than three consecutive weeks. In other words, it must be part time.
The part time care must be medically necessary. The person must be confined to the home based on a doctors orders, which also includes a formal home health care plan.
The home health care organization must be approved by Medicare as a participating agency.
Specific types of covered home health services incude: Skilled nursing care; physical speech, and occupational therapy; part time services of a home health aid; medical social services; and use of certain medical equipment.
Medicare covers an unlimited number of days of care as long as the above requirements are satisfied. There is no charge to the patient except for a 20% coinsurance payment for certain medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and hospital beds.
Home health benefits are not provided for custodial care, full time nursing care in the home, prescription medications, or blood transfusions.
