A gold dealer just went bankrupt owing customers more than $60 million. In 2008, we set out to build a company that could not fail that way.

Our co-founder Josh McCleary closes his series on trust in precious metals with the story of why. No commissioned salesforce, no celebrity spokesperson, and zero debt. Metal allocated in your name and held in an insured, independent vault, so it's actually yours. And the ability to start with as little as fifty dollars at an honest price.

It's a boring company on purpose. No exciting commercials, just fewer ways for you to get hurt.

The danger in buying gold was never that a dealer charges a premium. Every dealer does. It’s a premium you can’t see.

Our co-founder Josh McCleary breaks down how the biggest precious-metals cases were really about hidden prices. Red Rock said 1% to 5% and charged up to 130%. Safeguard claimed 23% and averaged 71%. Metals.com hid markups of 100% to 300%.

His test needs no math: don’t ask what the premium is, ask what the metal is actually worth the moment you own it. Plain bullion is worth close to what you paid. An overpriced “collectible” is worth a fraction, because the resale market only ever cared about the metal.

Regulators caught precious-metals dealers hiding markups of 71%, 130%, even 300%. OWNx co-founder Josh McCleary on how to spot a hidden markup with no math, and why an honest price is one you can see.

The gold industry has a favorite target: retirees and their savings. 👇

Regulators have documented it in case after case. Metals. com took more than $140 million from 1,600+ mostly elderly buyers. Safeguard Metals hit 450+ retirees. Red Rock Secured moved people’s 401(k)s and TSPs into overpriced coins. It isn’t a coincidence. It’s the business model: a big balance, a trusting voice, and manufactured fear.

You don’t need to be an expert to protect the people you love. Before your parents buy gold from anyone, help them ask four questions and get the answers in writing:

1. What’s my all-in price over the metal's value?
2. Is my metal allocated in my name at an insured depository?
3. What will you pay me if I sell today?
4. How are the people selling to me paid?

An honest dealer answers all four without flinching. And if a rep pushes “collectible” coins into an IRA, stop. The IRS generally prohibits them, and that alone is a red flag.

Our co-founder Josh McCleary wrote the full breakdown, the five red flags and the four questions. It’s the one to share with your parents:

If your gold dealer went out of business tomorrow, would your gold still be yours? 👇

For the customers of Rosland Capital, which just filed for bankruptcy owing more than $60 million for metal that was never delivered, the answer was no. They were treated as unsecured creditors, standing in line behind everyone else the company owed.

Here’s the difference that decides everything. “Unallocated” means you hold a claim against the dealer, with no specific metal set aside as yours. “Allocated” means specific metal is titled to you, in an insured independent vault, off the dealer’s books. If the dealer fails, allocated gold is still yours.

Our co-founder Josh McCleary explains the one word to listen for before you buy gold, and why he built OWNx so the answer to “is my gold still mine?” is always yes.

A gold dealer just went bankrupt while gold hit record highs. Here's what that should tell you.

Last week Rosland Capital, the company behind those William Devane "gold, gold, gold" TV ads, filed for bankruptcy, owing more than $60 million to customers who paid for gold and silver they never received.

Think about that. Gold is at record highs, and a gold dealer went broke. That only happens when the business was never really about the metal.

And it's not the first. Metals .com, Safeguard Metals, Red Rock Secured, and Lear Capital were all charged or bankrupted for the same playbook: celebrity ads, commissioned salespeople, and markups of 30% to 300%, aimed mostly at retirees.

Here's the part that matters most. A lot of Rosland's customers were doing exactly what everyone says to do: buying real coins and bars to take delivery and hold themselves. They still lost their money, because the danger was never paper versus physical. It was the gap between paying and holding. They paid, the metal never shipped, and they became creditors standing in line.

We have spent our time since 2008 building the opposite: transparent pricing, metal allocated in your name, and zero debt. No commissioned sales floor, no celebrity, no fear.

Before you or your parents buy gold from anyone, ask four questions and get the answers in writing:

1. What's my all-in price over spot?
2. Is my metal allocated in my name at an insured depository?
3. What will you pay me if I sell today?
4. How are the people selling to me paid?

An honest dealer answers all four without flinching.
