“I should be worried but I have a kick-ass emergency fund…”

After enough reminders from me that “that’s why we kept this much cash in your savings” when various life surprises came up following a divorce, my client stopped asking if it was going to be ok and started saying this instead.

The most recent time this came up she added, “I should put this on a t-shirt.”

And she did.

I’m really flipping proud of how much this client has overcome in the last 2 years while freshly parenting solo. Not only that but she’s also done some really bad*ss things professionally.

Here’s to the moms doing it all. 🥂♥️

Ignore the noise. Compounding growth should be quite boring when you’re doing it right.

It’s that time of year again—every big firm is releasing their market projections for 2025. These projections are… useless.

If you pay attention, you’ll notice a pattern. Many of these firms triangulate around the same number—the average annual market return. It’s safe, it sounds reasonable, and it feels comforting.

But here’s the thing: the market rarely delivers the ‘average return’ in any single year. The real returns are often way above or way below that average.

And here’s the kicker—many of these firms revise their projections throughout the year. Some do it frequently, which makes you wonder: If the original projection needed constant tweaking, how much value did it really have in the first place?

Instead of putting too much weight on market predictions, focus on what you can actually control: your financial plan. A good plan doesn’t rely on predictions.

Financial clarity is about understanding each other’s situation while keeping boundaries that feel right for both of you. Knowing what’s yours, what’s theirs, and what’s shared can make all the difference in building a balanced partnership. 💸💍

Time in the market beats timing the market.

Keeping the long view means looking out much further than a year, too. If you need that money in a year please don’t invest it in the stock market. This middle column is a good reminder why.

I love target date funds.

At a certain 401k size maybe an advisor can add some marginal value over a target date fund -maybe- but most of the time a target date fund will do just fine.
