saving money on your homeowners insurance.
step 1 if you are shopping for new insurance
1.make sure you have an up to date 4 point inspection
which means one that is less than a year old.
This inspection includes proof of updates on your a/c,plumbing,electrical and roof (any home 20 years or older will need this to get the best rate
Step 2 if anything needs updating do it before you start shopping. If you are closing on a new property and can't pass a 4 point inspection renegotiate with the seller. If you can't get insurance you can't close.
Step 3 use a reputable inspector and document any repairs that are done to meet the guidelines;you need to keep invoices or proof of payment especially if you have had a prior claim.

step 4 Try to get more than one quote if possible and pay close attention to exculsions, deductibles(out of pocket expense) before your carrier will pay. Also make sure you use an agent who will explain possible discounts or credits that will lower your premium if you do upgrades on your immediately or within the next 6 months

Home's insurance isn't cheap but sending a little money on your home could give you a nice discount.
