The Trump administration and HUD/FHA announced that legal non-permanent residents will no longer be eligible for FHA mortgages.
Let’s break that down…
This means that immigrants who are legally living and working in the U.S., but don’t yet have permanent residency (like a green card), are now locked out of using FHA loans to buy a home.
This change could also affect the broader housing market:
– Fewer first-time buyers entering the market
– Lower homeownership rates for immigrant communities
– A possible dip in housing demand, especially in diverse cities
– Over time, this could even impact home values and neighborhood stability in diverse communities
There are still programs for these families that allow this status, they just require much larger down payments.
