If your current Medicare Advantage plan is still available in your area for the upcoming year, it will simply roll over. No action is required, and your coverage will continue as usual.

However, if you receive a notice stating that your plan is ending on December 31st, don't ignore it. That notice means your plan will no longer be available, and you will need to choose a new plan before the deadline. Without action, you could face a gap in coverage heading into the new year.

The Medicare Part D late enrollment penalty is permanent, but it is also completely avoidable.

Enroll in a Medicare drug plan as soon as you become eligible. Never go 63 or more consecutive days without Medicare prescription drug coverage or other creditable coverage. And keep written records of when you had creditable drug coverage so you can report it to your new plan when needed.

Not all Medicare enrollment periods work the same way, and knowing the difference matters.

The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7 and is open to all Medicare beneficiaries to join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31 and is only available to those already enrolled in Medicare Advantage who need to make a change.
