Do you or someone you know need a wheelchair, walker, mobility scooter, shower chair, or other medical equipment?

The Disability Achievement Center serves residents of Pasco and Pinellas Counties and offers programs that may help individuals obtain durable medical equipment when available through donations and community funding.

Their Medical Equipment Recycling Program (MERP) provides donated equipment to individuals who may not otherwise be able to afford it, and additional assistance programs may help with equipment repairs, accessibility modifications, and other independence-related needs. Availability varies and waitlists may apply.

Being interviewed at a radio station gave me the opportunity to share my story and talk about why advocacy matters so much to me. Speaking openly about my experiences with Keratoconus and helping others navigate insurance challenges reminded me how powerful education and awareness can be.

This experience changed me.

Living with Keratoconus has taught me what it feels like to be scared, vulnerable, and unsure of what comes next. When your vision changes, your entire world changes with it.

That’s why I advocate so hard today. I’ve been the patient sitting in the chair. I’ve experienced fear, uncertainty, and moments that stayed with me long after I left the office.

Because of my journey, helping others is personal.

My Keratoconus story is deeper than blurry vision.

I was only 17 years old when I realized something was wrong with my eyes. I was looking through a camera… and everything was blurry.

Over time, vision loss changed my life in ways many people cannot see.

Driving became something I wouldn’t be able to do.
Reading became difficult.
Crowds increased my anxiety.
Even recognizing faces became hard, and I often identify people more by their voices.

Living with Keratoconus taught me how quickly health challenges can affect your independence, confidence, emotions, and everyday life.

But my journey also taught me the importance of advocacy, healthcare access, and protection.

I know what it feels like to be without health insurance.
I know what it feels like to need someone to advocate for you.
And I know the pain of burying a child without life insurance.

That is why I speak so openly today about vision, health, and life protection. Because these conversations matter before crisis happens.
