Medicare Advantage is changing. Benefits are tightening, cost-sharing is increasing, and at the same time, Medicare Supplement premiums continue to rise.

But I don’t necessarily see this as a problem. I see it as a shift in the Medicare market.

For years, Medicare Advantage had a significant advantage in the conversation. Low or $0 premiums, additional benefits, and strong value made it an attractive option for many people entering Medicare.

Medicare Supplement offered greater predictability and flexibility, but usually at a higher monthly cost.

Now, that gap is beginning to narrow.

As Medicare Advantage plans adjust benefits, increase inpatient copays, raise maximum out-of-pocket limits, and shift more costs to members, beneficiaries may start looking at their options differently.

For someone turning 65 today, the comparison between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement may look very different than it did five or ten years ago.

That’s why agents need to understand both sides of Medicare—not build their entire business around one product.

Neither Medicare Advantage nor Medicare Supplement is automatically the “better” choice. The right option depends on the individual’s healthcare needs, budget, providers, medications, and priorities.

The Medicare market will continue to change. Benefits change. Premiums change. Regulations change. Consumer needs change.
The agents who will continue to succeed are the ones who recognize those shifts early, educate their clients, and adapt their strategy accordingly.

The goal isn’t to sell the product that looks best today. It’s to understand where the Medicare market is going and be prepared to guide clients through it

Last week, I sat down with a local business owner who was frustrated with his Medicare coverage.

He told me, “I’m on an HMO. I need referrals for everything, and honestly, I don’t really understand how Medicare works.”

I asked him, “Who’s your broker?”
He said, “A really good friend of mine.”

My next question was simple: “Did they go over ALL of your Medicare options with you?”

He believed they had.

So I said, “Let me show you what Medicare looks like with a Medicare Supplement.”

Once I explained the coverage, his reaction surprised me. He said, “Of course I’ll pay that monthly!”

I told him, “Think of it like driving a Ferrari when it comes to your healthcare coverage.” 🏎️

I also made sure he understood that Medicare Part B premiums can change from year to year, and Medicare Supplement premiums can increase over time.

His response? “I’m okay with that.”
And yes… I ended up enrolling him into a Medicare Supplement. 😎

Quick steal? Sorry, not sorry. 😂

But here’s the real message for my fellow brokers:

GET EDUCATED. OFFER ALL THE OPTIONS.

The recommendation should be about what benefits the client — not what benefits you as the broker.

Don’t automatically put someone into an HMO because it has a $0 premium or because it’s the easiest option to present. Medicare Advantage HMOs can be a great fit for some people, and Medicare Supplements can be a great fit for others.

Supplements are NOT for everyone. Neither are HMOs.

Educate your clients. Explain the differences. Show them their options. Then let THE CLIENT make an informed decision.
