“Stab-Lok” breakers a hazard?
If a home is between 23 and 63 years old, and the breaker box has a Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panel with Stab-Lok circuit breakers, there could be a risk of a breaker malfunction and fire. The breakers’ purpose is to protect the home by tripping if the home’s electrical systems encounter a circuit overload or a short circuit. If the breaker does not work properly, the chances of a fire in the panel or the home increase significantly. An estimated 28 million FPE Stab-Lok breaker panels are currently in use and approximately nine million of these may fail to provide the intended protection. Multiple tests conducted on the breakers since the 1980’s have determined that
roughly one in four Stab-Lok breakers are defective. Many homeowners do not know if they have a FPE panel in their homes. The easiest way to tell is look at the front of the breaker box. If there is a Federal Pacific (FPE) label with a “Stab-Lok” label on the panel or red stickers on the breaker switches can be another indicator. If the home has a Federal Pacific panel or Stab-Lok breakers, the homeowner may wish to contact a licensed electrician to determine whether or not replacement is necessary.
