**Cancer Insurance**
The definition of cancer is a disease resulting from uncontrolled growth and division of abnormal cells; cancer is caused by gene mutations that may result from exposure to chemicals, carcinogens, radiation, and other causes.
You know, I thought I was not scared of anything. Then on a cold day in October of 2020, my husband and I found ourselves in an Oncologist at the hospital I work at. I had noticed he had some symptoms that were not normal for him, but I played them down. Labs were drawn, we were shuffled into a tiny back room of the office and the wait began. The doctor came in, checked my husband out thoroughly, and then told us the 3 scariest words I have ever heard in my life, "You have cancer." I remember my husband looking at me to intervene as I usually do. I was speechless--first time in my life I have ever had NO WORDS to say. At the time, my husband had the most unwaveringly faith that this was God's plan, so we needed to embrace it. While myself on the other hand, being a nurse, was pretty much scared to death.
Over the next few weeks, things moved very quickly. They sent off his blood work to confirm the exact type of cancer he had and how aggressive was it. My husband was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). It is a very rare cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood cells. He had 3 appointments that next week. One of them was a bone marrow aspiration. He had to be put under general anesthesia while they took a giant needle and inserted it into his lumbar area to grab some of his bone marrow tissue. This helped the doctor prescribe the correct type of medication.
Pictured below, you see my husband waiting on his turn to back to the operating room for his procedure. One of the pictures is of him at Key West this past summer. He is doing well--tired at times and sleeps for long periods, but he doing fine.
The bottle of medication you see pictured is his "chemo," pill. It costs $15,000 per month. Without our private health insurance and him being a veteran we would never be able to afford this medication. I have priced it with GoodRX and other companies. We would still be paying close to $15,000 per month! WHEWWW! That is an absolute insane amount of money for a lower middle-class family to be paying. Take away fro this---GET HEALTH INSURANCE!
Another take away-- I sell insurance for lots of companies. My "flagship," company is Colonial Life when it comes to supplemental insurance. If you get the right rep, me obviously, you get the best experience. Some of their policies have what is called, "Living benefits." This means there are built in benefits you can claim while you are alive, such as the infamous "health screening," benefit. When I first started selling insurance, I took out a Cancer Policy through my dad's brokerage. Typically, cancer policies are only offered to employees through their employer. Inn 2014 whenever the policy took effect. I NEVER thought I would have actual make a claim on it After all, insurance is something you get and pray you never have to use those benefits. Since my income is one that we count on each month, I was worried about missing work to be with him while he was starting his chemo meds. I was also worried about going back and forth with gas being high. Another thig I could only think of was having medical bills from this whole ordeal. I am here to say--I am so thankful God put that on my heart that day to write that policy out to myself. This small cancer policy that I made around $20 per month for ended up, after everything was said and done, in as little as 2 months, over $10,000. I did not have to worry about money.
If you want that piece of mind, see if your employer offers supplemental insurance to their employees. If not tell them, you are interest4edin Colonial Life products then hit me up. I will take care of the rest. We still file on the policy... it never goes away because you make a claim on it. Plus, if you ever leave the facility or company you work for when you took the insurance out, you can carry it with you.
Remember--Get that insurance and pray you never had to claim on it. I wish we didn't have to claim on it, but we still are claiming and still getting little payouts here and there for things like him going to his doctor's appointments or bone aspirations he has to have. They are there to alleviate costs that your health insurance may not cover. but if you get a GOOD health policy, you won't have much out of cost expensive and just have that extra cushion to fall back on like we did I was able to work part time and be with my husband.
If you are interested in a cancer policy, get in touch with me We will see if your employer will allow you to have it deducted out of check and maybe help spread some love to your other employers by getting them to offer it.
Get in touch with me about health insurance as well! Them bills PILE up!
