It's still storming outside and I'm already seeing roofers posting "call me so I can come inspect your roof" posts and ads.
Whether or not you are my client, here's some free insurance advice.
1. Do not let some random roofing company salesman enter your property and climb up on your roof.
2. If you do get your roof inspected, make sure you see proof of adequate liability and work comp insurance before they even get the ladder off their truck.
3. Do not let some random roofing company salesman talk you into filing a claim on your homeowner policy "and let's see if I can get you a free roof." Don't believe them if they say "it doesn't cost you anything to file a claim and see what happens." While at face value that's true - there's no fee to file a claim - if you have a couple of weather-related claims it will be difficult to impossible to shop and switch carriers for several years until the claims age off, even if one or more of them were zero payouts because it turned out you didn't have any damage.
4. Here's the most important tip. Ignore the storm chasers pounding on your door. Call your insurance agent and get a legitimate inspection of your property to see if you have any real damage BEFORE you file a claim.
5. Then if you do have significant damage go ahead and file the claim and choose a reputable local contractor to perform the repairs. If you need a callback for something after the job is done, it's going to be a lot easier to get someone to come see you from within the metro area than it will be to get them to come back from one to four states away.
