Ya'll might be surprised the correlation between oil prices and mortgage rates.

When oil prices rise, it usually pushes inflation higher because transportation, manufacturing, and energy costs increase across the entire economy.

When inflation rises, bond investors demand higher yields to keep up… and mortgage rates are heavily tied to the bond market (especially mortgage-backed securities).

So the chain reaction often looks like this:

Oil ↑ → Inflation ↑ → Bond yields ↑ → Mortgage rates ↑

When oil drops, the opposite pressure can happen.

It’s not the only factor affecting mortgage rates, but it’s one of those economic dominoes that people rarely connect.

The global economy is wild like that.
