Is My Child Covered Under My Car Insurance?
Before they get their license, your child may be covered as a permitted driver, depending on your carrier. If they are listed on your policy, once legally licensed to drive, your teen has the same coverage levels and deductibles as you do.
If you only have liability coverage to protect against property damage and bodily injury that you cause to others, your licensed teen will have the same coverage when they start driving under your insurance, if they’re added to your policy.
Your policy may also include comprehensive and collision coverage, especially If the vehicle is leased or financed as your lender may require it. These same protections (often mislabeled as full coverage), apply to your licensed child when driving, too, if they’re added to your policy.
Car insurance typically follows the car, not the driver. This may allow your coverage to extend to someone borrowing your car, often called permissive use. However, if a licensed driver is going to be driving your car regularly, like your teenager, they must be added to your policy.
Insurance companies are in the business of assessing risk. They set your premiums based on the level of risk that you and your household represent. To accurately assess your risk, they must know about all licensed members in the household and others who will regularly be driving your vehicles.
Insurance is there to protect you financially from losses you may encounter on the road. Your carrier needs to know all the drivers of your vehicles to protect you correctly. If you don’t add a regular driver of your vehicle to your policy, like your licensed teen, they may not be covered. All carriers require you to list all licensed drivers in the household and either include or exclude them from coverage.
One of the most important assets you may have, is your ability to earn an income. Heaven forbid you are forced to liquidate assets or suffer a wage garnishment to pay off the debt from a denied claim due to an undisclosed driver.
What Happens If I Don’t Add My Teenager to My Car Insurance?
“Hiding” your teen from your auto insurance company is always a bad idea. If your teenager causes an accident or is liable for any type of claim, and your insurance company did not know about them, they can deny you coverage. This means you and your teen would be personally liable for all damages.
Moral of the story… list all legally licensed drivers in your home and those that use your vehicles regularly. 😁
