Are your books more like a maze than a road map? What do they reveal about you and your business?

To a numbers guru, thorough financial records are like tea leaves. They can reveal great insight about a person or business.

The FAFSA is about so much more than just federal student aid. It opens doors to financial packages from the colleges themselves.

It's never too early to plan for college! Got a sophomore, junior or senior in high school with sights set on college? Without sounding too “bah humbug,” it would be a good idea to give each of them some homework over the holidays. They need to get familiar with the FAFSA if they want any shot a...

I met recently with a client who wants an exit plan from his partnership. The partners run an extremely successful business, but you wouldn’t be able to tell by the business tax returns.

Without an in-house finance department, all the financial heavy lifting may fall to the business owner - including questions from employees about gross, net, and all those taxes in-between.

Entrepreneurs and small business owners who don’t have an in-house finance department may find themselves having to answer questions from employees about compensation. You've made it to the fourth quarter, and the holidays are in sight. Every small business owner will be eager to know where they'll finish by the end of the year and whether they can anticipate a tax savings come next April. Regardless of the new tax laws, the only way to know how your business will fare is to do a little planning now. Before the end of the year, make sure you take a look at the following 5 items:

1) Review Income and Expenses - – the only way to know where you stand is to take a snapshot now. This helps answer how much you had to expend for every $1 of income you made.

2) Anticipate major payments - are there any big payments yet to come in or go out by the end of the year?

3) Itemize new activity for 2018 to get a good year-over-year comparison – this shows what made 2018 better (or worse). Were these one-time expenses or income items, or can you anticipate them continuing into 2019?

4) Review fixed assets for potential depreciation – there are changes under the new tax law, and you’ll want to be ready to take advantage if possible.

5) Verify W2 or 1099 and other payroll information – as a business owner, you want to ensure that your payroll company has the correct data before year-end.
