Before paying a medical bill, play a quick game of “Do these numbers actually match?”

Find the Explanation of Benefits, or EOB, from your insurance company and compare:

✔️ Patient and provider
✔️ Date and type of service
✔️ Amount the provider charged
✔️ Insurance payment or adjustment
✔️ Amount listed as your responsibility

Remember, an EOB is not a bill. It explains how the claim was processed.

If the provider’s bill is higher than the amount the EOB says you may owe, call the provider’s billing department and your insurance company before paying. Sometimes the claim is still processing, insurance information was entered incorrectly, or the bill needs to be adjusted.

Two minutes of checking can save you from paying the wrong amount.

A prescription pickup should not feel like a game-show price reveal.

Before paying, ask the pharmacy for:

✔️ The price using your insurance
✔️ The regular cash price
✔️ The price using a legitimate prescription discount

Then compare.

Sometimes insurance wins. Sometimes the cash or discount price is lower. Just remember that a purchase made outside your insurance generally will not count toward your deductible or out-of-pocket maximum, and discount programs usually cannot be combined with insurance.
