The chaos of the holiday season means you likely aren’t thinking much about safety. But you should, if just for a moment. Here’s a checklist for you:

✔️ Use “the shake test” to see if your Christmas tree needs water. If needles fall, it’s dry.
✔️ Inspect all your holiday lights. Look for frayed/damaged wires
✔️ Only use outdoor and indoor lights as indicated
✔️ Don’t overload circuits, extension cords and sockets
✔️ Keep giftwrapped presents away from windows
✔️ Don’t leave boxes for big-ticket items on the curb. Put them in black trash bags and don’t run them out until garbage day
✔️ Turn off holiday lights and space heaters when away or asleep
✔️ Keep holiday plants away from pets
✔️ Maintain woodburning fireplaces & chimneys
✔️ Travel safely and don’t overshare on social media

Does your holiday budget make you want to cancel Xmas? Don’t let it. We have tips to keep your holiday budget in line.

1️⃣ Tweak your holiday to-do list. That means:
• Make a list of all holiday activities & their estimated costs. This includes gifts, events & traveling
• Are you budgeted for everything? If not, find something to cut.
--
2️⃣ Reduce your costs by:
• Suggesting a gift exchange where you buy for one person instead of everyone
• Host a holiday potluck instead of a cocktail party
• Look for fun, but free holiday family activities
• Is Grandma’s house drivable? Make it a road trip and save on airfare
--
3️⃣ Avoid credit cards and buy now/pay later apps
• Use credit cards for convenience, not for credit
• If you know you over swipe, withdraw your holiday budget in cash
• Control your impulses
--
4️⃣ Learn the 50 | 30 | 20 budget rule
Here’s how it works:
• 50% of your income is for fixed expenses (mortgage/rent, food)
• 30% of your income is for you. Use it for the things you want, including vacations and entertainment
• 20% of your income is for saving, including retirement and an emergency fund

Winter weather can take a toll on your house. Get ahead of winter by remembering these winter home maintenance tips.

1. Disconnect garden hoses
Water left inside the hose could freeze and cause the lining to crack. Also, if the main nozzle on your hose freezes, ice could cause damage to the pipes connected to your house.

2. Keep heat on to prevent pipes from freezing
If you plan on being away from your home for a long period of time, do not turn off your heating system. Set your thermostat to ≥65° F to help prevent pipes from freezing.

3. Shut off your water main if you’re going away
You likely have two shut off handles: one before and one after the water meter. We suggest shutting off the one before the meter.

4. Prevent ice dams
Remove leaves and other debris from your gutters before winter to help prevent ice from forming inside the gutters, known as “ice damming.” Ice dams can cause water damage to your home.

5. Take care of your furnace
Change your furnace filter every three months. Be sure to call your HVAC service provider for your fall service check-up before winter hits.

Don’t let winter sneak up on you before you have a plan to help prevent damage to your home. But if a loss occurs, I will be here to help. Call me to make sure your insurance coverage is ready for winter.

💡As we go through life, whether in our work, our relationships, or our community, it's important to remember that healthy disagreement is a part of growth. If you’re in an environment where you can’t express differing opinions or challenge ideas, it’s hard to move forward.

Growth comes from being able to discuss, debate, and sometimes disagree—respectfully. It’s about being open to hearing other perspectives, learning, and finding ways to improve together. Let’s keep building environments—whether in our homes, schools, or workplaces—that foster respect and growth, not control.

Remember, it’s okay to stand up for yourself, ask questions, and seek the truth. That’s how we all get better.
