Congress faces a government funding deadline. The November midterms could flip control of tax policy by January. And IRS/Treasury guidance is still rolling out on everything from digital assets to new retirement accounts.

Last week, KBF Advisory and Resonant Tax Strategies broke down the full 2026 federal tax policy outlook — what's expiring, what the election scenarios mean, and what to watch at the IRS and Treasury even without new legislation.

Missed the live session? The quick recap and on-demand replay are both available now.

Most founders never think about tax until it's a line item on the diligence checklist.

By then, the mistakes are already years old: the 83(b) election that never got filed, the LLC that converted too late, the R&D credit nobody claimed.

None of these are rare. They're the default outcome when nobody's watching.

The fix isn't a better tax return. It's catching these decisions while they're still open — not after they're locked in.

Full breakdown here — including what to check right now, while these are still fixable: https://kbfadvisory.com/startup-tax-planning-mistakes-the-83b-election-qsbs-clock-and-rd-credits-founders-miss/

Selling into Illinois without a physical presence there? Take note: the Illinois Remote Retailer Amnesty Program is open now through October 31, 2026.

If you've crossed Illinois' $100,000 economic nexus threshold but haven't been reporting sales tax, this is a limited window to resolve past exposure — with penalties and interest waived — at a simplified rate.

Miss the deadline, and you could face a steep 15% "undetermined location" rate in a future audit instead.

Our SALT team breaks down eligibility, the filing process, and what's at stake if you wait. Read more: https://kbfadvisory.com/illinois-remote-retailer-amnesty-program-penalties-waived-through-october-31-2026/

A common misconception: the R&D tax credit is only for big tech and pharma.

It's actually one of the more accessible credits available — especially for early-stage and growing businesses. If your team is solving technical problems or developing something new, there's a good chance some of that work qualifies.

The hard part isn't qualifying. It's building documentation that holds up if the IRS asks questions. We break down what qualifies, what the IRS looks for, and how to structure a claim that survives scrutiny: https://kbfadvisory.com/kbfs-rd-tax-credit-study-a-five-step-process-for-audit-ready-claims/

Real estate owners often rely on a mix of brokers, property managers, tax advisors, and other specialists. The challenge is making sure major decisions aren’t being made in isolation.

KBF Advisory's new Real Estate Advisory practice, led by 30-year industry veteran Scott Fouser, brings portfolio strategy and tax planning together to help clients make more connected real estate decisions.

The practice helps owners, investors, and family offices navigate major decisions around buying, selling, financing, portfolio strategy, and ownership transitions.

If your business operates in multiple states, OB3 just created a new layer of complexity.

More than a dozen states - including Arizona, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont - passed legislation this quarter addressing whether and how they'll conform to OB3's changes to bonus depreciation, R&E expensing, the interest expense limitation, and international income provisions. Treatment varies significantly state to state, and in some cases the same federal provision is handled differently by the state and the city.

Q2 also brought corporate rate cuts in Arkansas and Georgia, a significant apportionment ruling in California, the first appellate decision affirming forced combined reporting in South Carolina, and new NOL limitations in Illinois and New Jersey.

Our Q2 2026 state and local tax newsletter breaks it all down, state by state: https://kbfadvisory.com/q2-2026-state-corporate-tax-update-ob3-conformity-rate-reductions-and-key-court-decisions/

The IRS has finalized updates to Form 6765.

Starting with tax year 2026 (returns filed in 2027), businesses claiming the R&D tax credit will need to provide detailed project-level reporting, including business components, qualified research expenses (QREs) by category, and descriptions of the research activities performed.

Our latest article breaks down what's changing, who's exempt, and what businesses should do to prepare.

Selling SaaS into California isn't only a sales tax question. There's a separate income tax nexus test running alongside it, with its own rules for what counts as "doing business" in the state.

SB 122 triggers sales tax registration at $500,000 in California sales. California income tax nexus runs on a separate standard, with a different threshold and a facts-and-circumstances test that can create a filing obligation even before you hit the number. Crossing one doesn't mean you've handled the other.

We break down how the two tests work, where they diverge, and what SaaS sellers should be doing before 2027: https://kbfadvisory.com/sb-122-is-not-just-a-sales-tax-story-what-californias-new-law-means-for-income-tax-nexus/
