The version you have heard has a magic mirror, a poisoned apple, and helpful animals.
The Brothers Grimm version has a queen who eats her stepdaughter's heart (or tries to), a child who is put to work for strangers, and a prince who negotiates with those strangers to take ownership of her "dead" body.
Same story. Slightly darker vibes.
Here's what no one talks about: she is SEVEN when the queen decides she's a threat. She's a literal child.
And not the brightest crayon in the box. The queen comes to her in 3 different disguises and gives her things that actively try to kill her. In her defense, it takes more persuading each time, but, still!
Her dwarf guardians keep leaving her at home. Alone. After multiple attempts on her life. And they are only keeping a roof over her head because she cooks and cleans for them. Its not like they're paying her.
She wakes up in a coffin. And she now belongs to someone else. They said he could have her, that's good enough.
If that's not enough, the queen is invited to the wedding and forced into shoes that keep her dancing until she dies. This is completely unhinged. But props to the creativity, honestly.
