Lithium-ion batteries can be a hidden fire hazard in your home if they’re not used or stored properly.

FEMA recommends following manufacturer instructions, unplugging devices once they’re fully charged, and avoiding prolonged exposure to heat. For safe storage, keep batteries in a cool, dry place ideally between 68-77°F and out of direct sunlight.

Taking a few simple, proactive steps can help reduce fire risk and keep what matters most a little more protected.

When hurricane season ramps up, so does the amount of information coming your way. In a world of fast-moving information, following trusted meteorologists matters.

To make sure you’re getting accurate information:
• Follow AMS-certified meteorologists or the National Weather Service.
• Be cautious of long-range forecasts that sound extreme.
• Verify before you share.

Trusted sources help you stay prepared and make informed decisions. And if the unexpected happens, we’re here to help you navigate what comes next.

Wildfires don't give much warning, but your home can be ready before one ever starts.

The key is managing the space around your home. Here are some simple steps from Firewise USA that reduce your risk dramatically:

• Trim branches that overhang your roof, porch, and deck
• Swap wood mulch for gravel or crushed stone close to your foundation
• Screen your roof and attic vents to block embers
• Use fire-resistant siding and dual-pane tempered glass windows
• Never store flammable materials under decks or porches

Your home is worth protecting. Learn the steps and share this with your neighbors before fire season hits.

Hurricane season starts June 1st. Do you have your disaster kit ready?

When a storm is on the way, store shelves empty fast and delivery windows close. The time to stock up is now, while you still have options.

NOAA recommends having enough supplies to sustain every member of your household for a minimum of 3 days, with more being better given that power and water can be out for weeks after a storm passes.

Here is what to have on hand:
• Non-perishable food, water, and medications for at least 3 days per person
• Battery-powered radio, flashlights, and extra batteries
• A portable crank or solar-powered charger for your cell phone
• Extra cash, since ATMs and card readers may be unavailable
• Food, water, and supplies for your pets

Start with the basics and build from there. June 1st is closer than it seems.

When a hurricane is approaching, the window to figure out where you are going and how you are getting there closes fast. NOAA recommends building your evacuation plan well before storm season peaks, not when a storm is already named.

A few things to think through now:
• Find out if you live in a storm surge evacuation zone through your local emergency management office
• Identify at least two routes out of your area in case roads become flooded or blocked
• Choose a destination outside of flood-prone areas, whether that is a family member's home or a designated shelter
• Write your plan down on paper and make sure everyone in your household knows it, including what to do with pets

The best evacuation plan is the one you made before you needed it.
