Real estate wire fraud is becoming a major problem across the country — and the scams are getting extremely sophisticated.

Here’s how it usually happens:

Hackers gain access to emails connected to a real estate transaction and quietly monitor conversations for days or even weeks. Then, right before closing, they send fake “updated wire instructions” that look completely legitimate — same logos, same signatures, sometimes even nearly identical email addresses.

The buyer or seller wires the money… and within minutes, it’s gone.

Unfortunately, many people never recover those funds.

According to the FBI, real estate wire fraud has caused hundreds of millions of dollars in losses nationwide, affecting buyers and sellers in every state.

The good news? One simple habit prevents most of these situations:

NEVER wire money based solely on emailed instructions.

Always call the title company or closing agent directly using a phone number you looked up yourself — not the number listed in the email — and verbally confirm the wiring details before sending anything.

That one phone call can save someone’s life savings.
