Tropical Storm Edouard

No need to panic, but now is a good time for everyone in SWLA and Southeast Texas to pay attention to the weather and make a few preparations. Prepare for possible tropical weather including high winds and possible tornadoes but do not panic! This isn't another major hurricane scenario, however there are still inherent risks.

For those of us in Southwest Louisiana, flooding is one of the bigger concerns. We all know how quickly some of our streets can hold water when we get heavy rain, so please don't wait until the water starts rising to think about where your vehicles are parked.

A few things to consider today:

• If your home, apartment complex or workplace has flooded before, consider moving your vehicle to higher ground ahead of the heavier rain.

• Keep your vehicle fueled and your phone charged.

• Think about the roads you normally take to and from work and which ones are known to flood. Have another route in mind.

• Avoid unnecessary driving during the worst of the weather.

• Most importantly, do not drive through flooded roads. It's very difficult to tell how deep the water is, especially at night, and conditions can change quickly.

For our friends and policyholders in Southeast and East Texas, continue keeping an eye on the forecast as well. Heavy rain and localized flooding are possible, and changes in the storm's path can change who sees the worst conditions.

If you're in an area that tends to flood, take a few minutes today to figure out where you could move your vehicle if necessary. It's much easier to do it early than when the rain is coming down and streets are already starting to hold water.

And remember, just because you see another vehicle make it through standing water doesn't mean yours will. When in doubt, turn around and find another way.

We've been through our share of Gulf weather around here. Be prepared, use good judgment, check on your neighbors, and stay safe.

We'll be keeping an eye on Edouard along with everyone else.

With Edouard approaching our area and expected to make landfall later today, there will be a chance for a few spin up tornadoes for areas east of the center. SPC has introduced a marginal risk over SE TX and SW LA to account for this potential.

As the week goes on, we’re tracking a severe weather threat that could bring the risk of flooding to our area by the end of this week.

Please take a minute to review your auto insurance coverage to make sure you have the right protection for your vehicle—and for your wallet. Also, make sure you can access your flood insurance documents and review what they cover.

One important reminder: rising water from the ground is typically excluded under most homeowners insurance policies. Flood insurance also usually has a 30-day waiting period, so it may not cover this upcoming event—but it could protect you in the future.

Please stay alert, take precautions, and don’t wait until the storm is here to get prepared. sure you have access to your flood insurance documents as well. Rising water from the ground is excluded under home insurance policies. Flood policies also have a 30 day wait period so it may not protect you this time but may in the future.
