Paying off any debt is a good thing, however when you settle a collection item to zero, your credit score can drop! The computer that calculates your FICO score goes off the "Date of Last Activity" and not the balance owed.

So when you pay a derogatory item and that item shows the new balance, that item will refresh the date of recent activity. This may not make sense but this is how credit scores get calculated.

With all the questions and concerns from the latest Equifax Breach and your identity, we would like to reiterate how important it is to monitor your personal credit report to make sure you are up to date with any inquiry to your Social Security Number.

There are hundreds of Identity monitoring sites out there but just make sure that you look at one for ALL 3 Credit Repositories. Also, keep in mind that “online scores” are typically higher than that of “mortgage scores” or other industry scores.

Equifax may offer a 12 month free credit monitoring but more importantly, this is not with the other two credit bureaus. And most likely Equifax will charge for that 1 bureau report after the 12 months is up and who knows what rights you will waive and give up as well. We really just recommend clients monitor ALL 3 Bureau reports!
