Research careers don’t always come with predictable income.

Grants, consulting, speaking engagements, and other opportunities can cause earnings to change from one year to the next.

We see this often with research-driven professionals. A strong year can create new opportunities, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that income will continue at the same level.

That’s why variable income deserves the same thoughtful planning as the rest of your financial life.

How are you planning around income that may change?

Academic careers don’t always happen at one institution.

We see professors move between universities, research positions, and leadership roles while accumulating retirement accounts along the way.

Having multiple accounts isn’t necessarily a problem. But over time, it can become harder to see how everything works together.

Consolidating everything isn’t always the answer either. The question is whether the structure you have today still makes sense for where you are now.

When was the last time you looked at all of your retirement accounts together?

A few things to consider:

Moving into university leadership can change more than your day-to-day responsibilities.

A department chair, dean, or program director role may come with changes in compensation, benefits, and financial priorities.

We’ve seen how important it is to think beyond the immediate increase in income, especially when an administrative appointment may not be permanent.

The decisions you make around a new role should still make sense if your career changes again.

How does the next stage of your career fit into your bigger financial picture?

Are you applying the same level of analysis to your real estate as your career?

Many researchers, professors, and university leaders make thoughtful decisions every day. Real estate is no different.

A home or investment property can influence liquidity, cash flow, and future opportunities in meaningful ways.

We believe real estate decisions deserve the same structured thinking as any other important investment.

How does your real estate strategy support the life you're building?

We've noticed that research-driven professionals often face financial decisions that don't fit a standard template.

Scientists, professors, and university leaders tend to think differently. Their careers, opportunities, and priorities can be unique.

That's why we believe investment decisions should reflect the person behind them, not just the portfolio.

What if retirement didn't have to happen all at once?

We've seen that some of the most successful transitions happen gradually.

For one professor, retirement became less about stopping work and more about creating flexibility, purpose, and income that aligned with the next chapter.

Sometimes the goal isn't reaching the finish line. It's designing the path that gets you there.

Curious how he approached it? The story may give you a different perspective on retirement: https://ow.ly/znnU50ZiMOq

We were recently asked, “When you coach entrepreneurs, what do you do?”

The short answer is we help them think clearly about risk, opportunity, and long term decisions. Running a business often means wearing every hat at once. It is easy to stay busy but harder to step back and evaluate direction.

Coaching is about asking better questions, looking at tradeoffs, and planning moves before they become urgent. It is not about hype. It is about discipline, accountability, and making thoughtful decisions that align with the bigger picture.

Three exciting updates here at Summit. First, we are adding an encrypted document vault so clients can store and transmit personal information securely.

Second, once planning is complete, clients will receive access to the software so they can build models and run what if scenarios in the future.

Third, we have begun searching for and hiring a staff CPA who will work in house so tax strategy, investment strategy, RMDs, Social Security planning, financial planning, and business planning remain aligned.

These changes are about strengthening how we serve and improving coordination across everything we do.

We want to take a moment to recognize Blake Albregts for passing his Series 66.

Earning this credential takes discipline, preparation, and a serious commitment to doing things the right way. It reflects the level of care and professional growth we value at Summit.

Behind every exam is time invested after hours, questions worked through, and a steady focus on getting better. That matters.

Blake’s progress strengthens our firm and the people we serve. It is always rewarding to see someone put in the work and reach a milestone like this.

Well done, Blake!
