Springtime in Louisiana means yard work season is officially back. I started this project thinking it would be a quick job… and it turned into a full workout instead. Mud included.

But honestly, I enjoy this kind of work.

Being outside, staying active, and getting your hands dirty every now and then is good for the soul.

Back in 2008, when markets were falling and I was living off my savings while coaching college baseball… I kept hearing the same thing from the firms managing my money:

“Just hang in there.”
I never liked that answer.

That season changed my career.

It pushed me to figure out how to build retirement plans that are proactive, structured, and built around real people, not canned responses.

Stopped by The Home Depot this weekend and met someone who really made my day.

This is Bonnie.

She’s worked at this location for 29 years.

Twenty-nine years of showing up, helping customers, and being part of her community.

In a world where people are constantly moving on to the next thing, you don’t see that kind of dedication very often anymore.

Bonnie and I had a great conversation, and I asked if she wouldn’t mind taking a picture with me because people like her deserve a little recognition.

Work ethic.
Commitment.
Pride in what you do.

Those things still matter.

My wife Tina snapped these while I was taking down a tree on our property.

We are working on developing it for our family and sometimes that means picking up a chainsaw and doing the hard work yourself.

There is something satisfying about building something with your own hands.

It reminds me that the things that matter most in life do not build themselves.

Your health.
Your family.
Your future.
They take time.
They take effort.

They take showing up even when it would be easier not to.

Grateful for strong hands, a strong wife who documents it, and the opportunity to build something meaningful.

College baseball season is back, and I love this time of year.

I spent many years coaching the game, and those lessons never leave you. Discipline. Accountability. Preparation.

Now watching my stepson play at LSU feels like a full-circle moment.

Baseball teaches you that success doesn’t happen overnight.
It happens in the daily work, the reps, the fundamentals, the commitment to improvement.

That mindset carries over into everything I do including how I approach retirement planning.

There’s no shortcut to building something that lasts.
