FRAUD ALERT: Several of our banking partners have warned of a new twist on a common scam impacting banks, but this scam targets businesses rather than individuals. While LaSalle State Bank customers have not reported this particular scam, we have heard of similar versions in the past. It is important that we all remain aware and prepared.
Bad actors are using Voice Over IP (VOIP) systems to place calls to business banking customers. These calls spoof the financial institution's phone number with a bad actor posing as a “Treasury Department” employee of that financial institution. Once the pretext is established, the bad actors attempt to obtain sensitive account information to facilitate large, fraudulent ACH transfers. The bad actors appear to be using information publicly available from the Small Business Administration Payment Protection Program. Please know that LSB does not have a Treasury Department and we would never ask you for sensitive information like account numbers, passwords, or dual authentication codes. Never share this information with others.
Please keep in mind, bad actors recognize that some time periods at a business, for example, holidays or the summer travel season, can present an opportunity to take advantage of added distractions or people covering roles for which they don’t normally have primary responsibility.
As always, please contact LaSalle State Bank at 815-223-8800 if you think you may have been a victim of a scam. Please remain vigilant and keep others around you informed of these scams. Being aware, alert, and responding quickly are the best ways to thwart fraud attempts. Be careful out there!
