Distracted driving is a significant and preventable issue. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 29% of all motor vehicle crashes are caused by distracted drivers – resulting in over 10,000 fatalities, 1.3 million injuries, and 5.6 million damaged vehicles annually. The economic impact is estimated at nearly $100 billion each year.
Why it matters
In a 2026 study conducted by State Farm, almost 70% of all U.S. drivers surveyed admitted to repeated distracted driving behaviors including texting, actively using apps including social media, recording or watching videos, and reading or writing emails.
62% of drivers surveyed said they believe taking their eyes off the road for 2+ seconds is completely safe, while research shows a 2-second glance away from the road doubles the risk of a crash.
