2015 ABC National Safety Excellence Award, LyondellBasell Bright Star Award
La Porte, Texas � April 18, 2016 � MobleySafway has received the coveted Associated Builders and Contractors’ (ABC) 2015 National Safety Excellence Award, rising to the top of a select group of honorees at local levels, which included scores of top industrial service contractors across the United States.
Additionally, MobleySafway received the 2015 Goal ZERO Bright Star Award from LyondellBasell, a leading global petroleum refining and processing company.
ABC grants the National Safety Excellence Award to those firms that: demonstrate a management commitment to, and expectations of, safety excellence; implement and continuously improve an overall safety management system; and develop real-time training and programs to address measurable indicators and industry trends.
“This is a true testament to teamwork in our efforts to create a very strong safety culture,” said MobleySafway President Chuck Mobley. “Our safety culture is supported as a key value by our management, from the top down. Every MobleySafway worker, and everyone else on a job site, should go home to his or her family safe every day. Unless we achieve that, nothing else matters.”
MobleySafway executives were on hand at a March 2, 2016, gala in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to receive the award. MobleySafway has won this distinguished honor four times in the past.
The 2015 LyondellBasell Bright Star Award is granted to contractors that have successfully completed the calendar year without a recordable injury in any LyondellBasell facility. In 2015, MobleySafway maintained a constant presence in eight LyondellBasell facilities while conducting a multitude of especially safety-sensitive tasks. MobleySafway is a repeat winner of this award as well.

Waukesha, Wis. – Sep 26, 2016 – The MobleySafway Solutions Houston Branch has received a Diamond Level Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Award in recognition of its safety practices and results. The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Houston chapter granted the award after the branch achieved a number of key safety benchmarks, including a recordable incident rate in 2015 that was less than half the average for industrial insulation and coatings companies.
The Diamond Level award is the highest safety honor bestowed by ABC, and makes the MobleySafway Houston branch eligible for a national STEP award. The award was formally presented to the MobleySafway team at a July 8 event. “This business is first and foremost about people, and we are very aware that any uptick on a safety statistic represents somebody’s dad, spouse or sibling,” said Chad Murphy, regional environmental health and safety manager for MobleySafway. “That’s why the safety of each and every person in our organization is so important,” he said.
“This recognition is special, because it is a measure of best practices, not minimum standards,” Murphy added.
“We work very hard to make sure everyone throughout the Safway organization is focused on safety,” said Paul Amedee, vice president of Safway, MobleySafway’s parent company. “To be effective, we all have to own safety, and we must hold each other accountable for that ownership.”
In announcing the award, the ABC said, “The STEP award is a badge for ABC members to wear proudly. The award is a testament to the customers, employees and supporters of the winning company that safety is an important tenet for them.”
ABC STEP Awards are based on data submitted via an application, essay questions and video interviews with company executives about their corporate safety culture. Safway has established 10 Life-Saving Rules along with a Stop Work Policy to ensure that every employee understands that his or her actions are critical to ensuring safety throughout the thousands of jobsites across North America. Honors cite zero recordables for last three years at two plants
Waukesha, Wis. Oct. 26, 2016 MobleySafway Solutions Corpus Christi branch has earnered two significant safety awards from the Contactors Safety Council of the Coastal Bend and Port Industries of Corpus Christi, for years of incident-free services at two large refineries. MobleySafway, a coatings, insulation, fireproofing and scaffolding firm, has earned two South Texas Industrial Industry Safety Excellence Awards for work at both the Citgo and the LyondellBasell plants.
At Citgo, MobleySafway provides scaffolding, surface prep blasting, and painting services on a year-round continuous basis for the giant East and West oil refineries, which together cover more than 500 acres in Corpus Christi. This represents nearly a million work hours over the last three calendar years (2013-2015) with zero recordable incidents or violations.
At LyondellBasells Corpus Christi chemical plant, MobleySafway provides a range of services related to coatings and prevention of corrosion under insulation and fireproofing, on a sequential project basis and has had a continuous presence there for several years. The plant makes ethylene, propylene and other petrochemical products on a 2,000 acres facility. At the LyondellBasell plant, MobleySafway achieved approximately 215,000 incident-free hours over the last three years.
These awards represent a really great track record. “It feels great to win awards, but it feels even better to know we’ve consistently kept our employees and the workers around them safe over the years,” said Johnny Morin, MobleySafway’s regional environmental health and safety manager.
Asked how his company achieved such impressive results, Morin said, “First, we go by the book. We follow all safety procedures.” He added, “Beyond that, we preach safety every day, throughout the day.”
He noted that one of MobleySafway’s keys to safety success is “building a safety culture from the helpers on up, including having supervisors on site who not only do audits, but also walk through the work sites on a regular basis and get involved.”
The two associations granted the two awards based on OSHA/MSHA logs, a review of three client references, a written synopsis of the contractor’s safety management program, and on-site evaluations of applicants by a team of safety professionals and/or a third party audit.
