Who knew?!!

San Diego invented an entire sport because a volleyball net was taking too long to go up. 🏐

Over-the-Line was devised in the 1950s by Old Mission Beach Athletic Club regulars on South Mission Beach, reportedly while they stood around waiting on that net. The rules they landed on are beautifully lazy: three players a side, no baserunning at all, and a ball that has to clear a line about 55 feet from the batter. Hit it past the line and past the fielders and you score. Nobody runs anywhere.

The first tournament was held in 1954. It has long since outgrown the beach where it started and now takes over Fiesta Island in Mission Bay for two weekends every July, drawing roughly 700 teams.

The culture grew just as fast as the sport. The costumes, the tent city and the famously unprintable team names have been as much a part of the event as the games themselves, which is about what you would expect from something invented by people who did not feel like setting up a net.
