Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement? Understanding the difference is an important first step.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is another way to receive your Medicare coverage through a private insurance company. Plans include Medicare Part A and Part B, most include Part D prescription coverage, and costs and provider networks can vary by plan. Some plans may also include additional benefits.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare to help cover certain out-of-pocket costs. You keep Original Medicare Part A and Part B, can generally see any provider that accepts Medicare, and prescription drug coverage is typically purchased separately.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The right option depends on your healthcare needs, prescriptions, providers, budget, and preferences.

Your Annual Notice of Change is an important document to watch for each fall.

If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage or prescription drug plan, your plan should send this notice in September. It explains any changes to your coverage, costs and other plan details that will take effect in January.

Take time to review it carefully, even if you are happy with your current plan. Changes to premiums, covered prescriptions, provider networks or other benefits could affect whether the plan continues to meet your needs.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, making it a good time to review your vaccination history and prepare for fall respiratory illness season.

Depending on your age, health and previous vaccinations, your healthcare provider may recommend certain vaccines to help protect you in the months ahead. For eligible adults who have not already received an RSV vaccine, the CDC identifies August through October as the ideal time to receive it in most of the continental United States. For most adults, September and October are generally recommended for flu vaccination.
