Roth vs. Traditional 401(k)

The question isn't which one is better. A better question is: which one is better for you, right now?

Here's the primary tradeoff:
• Traditional 401(k): You defer taxes today; you pay them later
• Roth 401(k): You pay taxes today, and your money grows tax-free for retirement

The tax math favors Roth when your tax rate today is lower than it will be in retirement. The tax math favors Traditional when your tax rate today is higher than in future years.

That may sound simple, but many people may underestimate how much their income (and tax rate) will grow over time. Others may overestimate how low their retirement withdrawals or retirement taxable income will be.

A few things that push toward Roth: ✅ You're early in your career ✅ Your income is expected to grow significantly ✅ You want tax diversification in retirement ✅ You're concerned about future tax rates rising

A few things that push toward Traditional: ✅ You're in your peak earning years ✅ You expect lower retirement income ✅ You want to reduce your taxable income now

The best strategy for most people? Both - at the right ratio and timing for your situation. That's the kind of planning that increases flexibility and has the potential to reduce lifetime taxes.

Our Second Annual Client Appreciation Event was this past weekend and it did not disappoint. It was filled with good food, live music from Cole Sitzlar, UT Football and some of the people who mean the most to us.

A huge thank you to one of our clients for smoking the pulled pork, brisket, and chicken for the entire group. So many of our clients are still talking about how good it was!

It was especially meaningful to recognize some of our very first clients who believed in us from the beginning. Your trust and support have meant more to us than you know, and we’ll never take it for granted. 🙏

We’re so grateful for our Kinetic Wealth family!

~ When To Claim Social Security ~

Some people treat Social Security like a checkbox - "I'm eligible, so I'll take it,” or “I retired, so I’ll take it.”

But the timing decision is a crucial financial choice:

• You can claim as early as age 62, but your benefit and subsequent spousal benefits are permanently reduced
• Every year you delay between age 62 and 70, your monthly benefit grows by as much as 8%
• Delay until 70 and you could receive significantly more per month and potentially more in total over your lifetime

The break-even age is often around 78–82. If you live past that, waiting generally provides more total benefits. If health is a concern, claiming earlier may make more sense.

And don't forget spousal benefits. A higher-earning spouse delaying can significantly increase the total benefits both spouses receive over their combined lifetimes.

There's no universal right answer. But there's almost always a better answer, and it starts with running the numbers for your specific situation.

What Is Sequence-of-Return Risk?

Two people retire with the same average investment return over the last 20 years. One runs out of money. One doesn't.

How? Sequence-of-return risk.

It's not just what returns you get, it's when you get them.

A major market downturn early in retirement can force you to sell investments at depressed prices to cover living expenses. That means fewer shares are left to recover when the market bounces back.

The same downturn at age 45 is painful but recoverable. You're still contributing, still accumulating, and you carefully ride it out.

At age 62, this downturn in an overly risky portfolio can permanently alter your financial plan.

What helps manage it:

• Maintaining 1–2 years of expenses in cash or short-term bonds so you're not forced to sell equities in a down market

• A thoughtful allocation and management approach that reflects precisely where you are in your journey, not just your risk tolerance

• A written plan that accounts for bad-sequence scenarios before they happen
The market will have bad years. An important goal of financial planning is to make sure a bad year at the wrong time doesn't become a permanent problem.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the heroes who showed incredible courage on September 11, 2001.

We honor their sacrifice and will always remember the strength and unity that followed.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Celebrating 4 years of marriage today❤️

Since getting married, we’ve learned that building a life together takes a lot of the same things that go into building a strong financial plan: having a vision for the future, making intentional decisions along the way, communicating openly, and remembering that the goal isn’t just about where you are today ..... it’s about where you want to go together.

That mindset is a big part of why we love what we do at Kinetic Wealth. Helping families plan for the life they want to build, the experiences they want to enjoy, and the legacy they want to leave is incredibly meaningful to us because we’re building our own future right alongside them.

The years between retirement and Required Minimum Distributions can be a golden window for Roth conversions. But "golden" looks different for everyone.

This video covers the concept rather than a one-size-fits-all answer. Whether converting (paying tax now) or deferring (not paying tax now) makes sense depends entirely on your tax picture, your goals, and a lot of factors we can't predict, including future tax rates.

Watch, learn, and if you have questions, we're always here.
