I really don’t know anyone who wouldn’t like for something to be different in his or her life, work, family, community or world. Most people who really considered it, would like to different in his or her own being. We want it so we will it to happen. Then we wait.

It’s a lot like New Year’s resolutions. It’s like coming to the end of your rope or having had it or realizing there is something better. You want it. You will it to be. You might even resolve to bring it about. Then you wait. Typically, most of such things you want to change are things that have been the way they are for some time. They are habits, routines, autopilot. These things that you want to change, in the sense that they involve behavior, attitudes, or things you have some say over, are probably well-entrenched. You’ve done these things so long that – even if they are not good habits – you’ve become good at them.

The thing that’s missing in the “want it, will it, and wait” formula is “WORK.” Fixing a problem, accomplishing a goal, doing things differently, making any kind of change involves work. It’s not just any kind of work, however. The work necessary to implement a change – and everything is about change – the work necessary involves the “change process.” Believe me, that is hard work.

To change something, you need to stop doing it the old way. That’s much trickier than it sounds. The old ways take on life of their own and are self-protecting. Doing the new thing is probably not something you’ve been practicing for months, so you aren’t good at it. In fact, it’s uncomfortable. It requires intentionality on your part. It necessitates consistency on your part. You will have to be content to change by steps and make missteps along the way.

If you want a change – and who doesn’t – you need to really want it and then work for it. But the work isn’t just more effort. It’s effort by design to rewrite old practices with new and better procedures. Want it. Work for it. By the way this kind of change applies to growing and emerging into your authentic self. It’s the kind of work that often proceeds best with the accountability of a coach. You can do it.

When I coached AYSO soccer, I always told my players, “There are so many things in a given game that you cannot control. But the things you can and must control are actually the most important. Those are effort and attitude.” If an outcome is important, it’s time. If the impact is important, it deserves your best effort. And it’s hard to give your best effort to things you don’t believe are important. When engaged in an activity of whatever degree of importance, your attitude or mentality is critical to your accomplishments in that endeavor. Being in the danger zone, sets you up for a bad attitude, less than best effort, an expenditure of time and attention that are less productive. Monitoring yourself for danger zone is a key to fulfilling your Outcome Vision and your objectives.

The importance of the Danger Zone concept is for you to be able to self-monitor and self-adjust. You being authentically you, doing what matters, and fulfilling your sense of life’s purpose is essential. Things that keep you from doing so put you in the Danger Zone. You don’t have to nor should you just stay there!

If you could pick one day of your life and lock in that day for the rest of your life, what day would you pick? Once you lock it in, no day will ever be worse than that. While your days will vary, you’ve set the standard that will not be breached. That also means no day will ever be any better than that.
There are people in your world who will try to do that to you – to lock you into a day or a period of your life. Only they will typically choose one of your worst days. They will try to define you by that day or that period of your life. That’s simply who you are. They don’t allow for the possibility of growth, change, development, or accomplishment in your future. Most of us would rebel aggressively at such a thing. Yet it happens and people often just live with it
What’s worse, people often do it to themselves. A bad thing happens to you, or you do something you hate and regret. You define yourself by that day, that event, that grievous moment. You don’t allow yourself to move past it, overcome it, or grow from it. Or maybe you lock in the offender who wronged you, and you define them by the thing they did to you. That locks both them and you into that event or that day.
The fact is that life is about change. Everyone changes. Every day you change. You are never the person you were before. You may have times that you will have to forgive and move on from a horrible experience. If you don’t, if you continue to hold on to it, you lock yourself in and surrender perpetual power over you to your offender. If you do not forgive yourself – and make whatever amends are possible - you surrender your true self which is yet to emerge and develop. Life is like a hike on a mountainous path. There are challenges and risks. There are also accomplishments and rewards. There will be falls and injuries, mistakes, and setbacks. But for the one who keeps climbing, the view becomes grander, the experience more exciting, the effort more worthwhile, and the person you are more complete and impactful. Never lock yourself into just one day, a period in your life, or an event. You are more. There is always more, a lot more. Your best day is still ahead. Go for it.

What is an asset anyway? We usually think in terms of the financial economies. And that’s true, but it’s not complete. We often think of people who are attractive, talented, or charismatic as being gifted or of having assets. That’s going in the right direction. There are many possessions you have that others want and are willing to exchange for – value for value.
One such asset is your attention. But that’s not an asset! Well, it must be, because so many people want it. Why else would teachers, bosses, parents, spouses, and Judge Judy tell to PAY attention? Other assets include: your physical ability and your presence. People need other people. Your experience, your training, your network of other asset-loaded individuals, your affirmation and support, your appreciation. These are things others want and you have to give. Your energy and enthusiasm. Your endorsements. Caring. Guidance and Perspective. A prayer partner. An accountability partner. When you show up at work, you bring an abundance of wealth with you. When go back home at the end of the day, you take with you an abundance of wealth. Wherever you go as you, you bring a plethora of assets.
One we didn’t mention, may be among the most important. Time. No one seems to have enough of it. Yet you cannot buy more, borrow more, create more, nor retrieve any. Time goes on with exceeding reliability. You can try to get more time by limiting what you do. You can try to multiply your time by getting others to do some of your chores and responsibilities for you.

You have an abundance of assets, and you are the steward of them. They should be used to the best of your ability for the most important things and people to you. And you will still have some for charity, gifts, random acts of kindness – and spontaneous, frivolous purchases. Treasure your assets, not for their own sake. Treasure your assets because of what they empower you to do and the impact they enable you to have.

Every individual is unique in all of time and place. You are unique, valuable, capable, and with a purpose in life. You are similar to others in many ways, but not identical to anyone. You have many assets and abilities in common with others, but no one else can bring them to address the world’s needs and challenges as you, except you. We are asserting that you bring something totally unique, and you matter. Be careful to note the sequence here. It’s not that you matter because of what you can bring to the world. You matter because you are you, therefore you can bring to the world things that have a significant, positive impact.

I don’t run for exercise anymore, but when I did, it mattered what kind of surface I ran on. I found asphalt and concrete too hard on my joints and feet. I preferred sod or grass or the like. The one time my wife and I ran on soft sand on Cumberland Island, I found that to be horrible difficult (packed sand is not so bad). Running through marsh or quicksand are totally out of the question.

Metaphorically, where you stand in the conduct of your life matters. You want to stand on solid ground. You want to build on bedrock. Many people stand on popular opinion or trends or the latest product or technology. Careful, this ground is typically unstable soft sand. Others stand on the position or instruction of others who assert authority over them. While refusing to stand there could be difficult, that ground may not support what you want to build in life. Alternately, stepping out on a whim or impulse is like jumping into swampy water trusting there will be something stable there to catch you.

To direct your life well, stand on solid ground. Place your feet on Overarching Universal Enduring Truths. What’s true, demonstratable, take a stand there. What you really care about and will give your all for, take your stand there. The people you care about, walk that way. That which excites you, fulfills you, and truly expresses you, go there. If you’re ever going to fall in life, at least fall while standing on or for something in which you believe. Where you put your feel matters!
