Fall color. Heavy traffic. Leave room.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the country, with more than 11.5 million recreation visits in 2025, according to the National Park Service. If you're heading up for leaf season, you'll have company.
A few things that make the drive easier:
- Leave extra space between you and the car ahead. Scenic traffic slows and stops without much warning.
- Want a photo? Use a pullout and get all four tires off the road. Don't stop in the travel lane.
- Driving slowly to take it all in? Pullouts are there to let faster traffic by, too.
- On long downhill stretches, shift to a lower gear instead of riding your brakes.
- Watch for animals crossing, especially early, late, and after dark. If you spot a bear or elk, stay in your car.
- Cell service in the park is extremely limited, so download a map before you go.
