Since it’s Election Day, I thought it would be appropriate to share a text message I received from one of my commercial insurance clients last night around 7:30pm. I’m sure he had just gotten in from a hard days work, and opened his mail. He has a nice landscaping business, that I have insured for years. I insure several vehicles and equipment for him. He’s a hard working American, no different than many of you that will read this…. If you haven’t voted yet, please go vote.

With the temperatures plummeting over the next week, here are a couple tips to help prevent freezing pipes. I have seen some pretty nasty claims through the years. Here’s a screenshot from a claim last year from busted pipes. Hopefully these tips will help.

Keep the heat in a house at a minimum of 50 degrees Fahrenheit, even if you’re not going to be home.

Keep interior doors open. This allows heat from the rest of the home to spread, keeping pipes warm.

During bouts of extreme cold, allow faucets to drip slightly. This can alleviate pressure in the piping system.

If you are traveling, you should turn the water off to avoid potential damages and repair costs that a busted pipe may cause.

Disconnect, drain and store water hoses.

Close any shut-off valves that supply outdoor hose bibs and open the faucet outside to drain the line.

Consider using faucet covers for additional protection against frozen pipes.

Drain water from any sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer’s instructions.

Seal any cracks and holes found near pipes. This can help keep cold air out of the home.

Add extra insulation to the pipes. Experts recommend fitting pipes with foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves.
